The collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment has been thriving for more than ten years now, particularly with the rejuvenation of the iconic monsters Godzilla and Kong through their respective reboots. These modern adaptations have been some of the most profitable films in the 2020s, and another installment is set to be released as Godzilla vs. Kong. Although there are still many details about this movie that remain unknown, speculation among fans suggests they’ve already figured out who the antagonist will be.
It seems highly likely that SpaceGodzilla will take on the role of the antagonist in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, given the hints dropped in the latest trailer. This would mark his first appearance in the film series in over two decades since he was initially introduced in the 1990s. Despite being less well-known than other giant monsters (kaiju), SpaceGodzilla is ideally suited to serve as the main adversary for the MonsterVerse movie.
Legendary Has Practically Confirmed the Next MonsterVerse Villain
Fans Already Believe That SpaceGodzilla Will Be the Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Enemy
On May 9th, 2025, the teaser trailer for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, produced by Legendary and Warner Bros. Discovery, was unveiled. This is the follow-up to 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the sixth film in the shared MonsterVerse, which started with Legendary’s Godzilla reboot in 2014. Given that the movie won’t be released until 2027, the trailer doesn’t reveal much, but there are a few intriguing hints. The most significant is a more somber and serious tone, which seems to differentiate it from the previous three films’ more action-packed, animated style. The teaser takes place at Monarch’s headquarters, an organization within the MonsterVerse that monitors titan activities. A message on a laptop screen in the trailer suggests imminent danger, shown amid clips of recent events caused by the Titans. The most captivating aspect might be a looping binary code message, which fans have begun interpreting to potentially reveal the movie’s antagonist.
Fans are speculating that SpaceGodzilla might be the antagonist of the upcoming MonsterVerse film, given the ominous cosmic threat hinted at in the trailer and the subtitle “Supernova”. The color scheme of the title, with its yellow hue, could suggest King Ghidorah or possibly SpaceGodzilla due to the white-yellow crystals on the latter. If SpaceGodzilla is indeed in the movie, it would mark his first appearance since joining the franchise long ago.
Who Is SpaceGodzilla?
The Alien Monster Was One of the Original Heisei Era Villains
In the film titled “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla“, SpaceGodzilla is believed to be a composite of various monsters. It’s hypothesized that Godzilla’s Genetic Cells (G-Cells) were transported into space, possibly by Mothra in “Godzilla vs. Mothra“, or when they were expelled by the plant-like Biollante during her battle with Godzilla. Biollante was a fusion of Godzilla’s DNA and plant life, and when the G-Cells combined with a space crystal organism, SpaceGodzilla was born. Unlike the original Godzilla, this creature was malevolent, boasting a larger, more muscular body, and in place of dorsal fins, he had large crystals. He also sported a central crystal on his forehead, encircled by smaller crystals that drew energy from the environment. These gems granted him telekinetic abilities, which he used to capture Godzilla’s adopted “son”, Little Godzilla.
As a cinephile who adores the King of the Monsters, let me share my take on an eventful encounter: Following the capture of Junior Godzilla, SpaceGodzilla unleashed his colossal might to construct a crystalline fortress. This was after he mercilessly defeated M.O.G.U.E.R.A., a space-based robot drone that had been upgraded from an original robotic mecha in the classic Toho movie, “The Mysterians.” Sadly, M.O.G.U.E.R.A. proved no match for him. However, Godzilla put up quite a fight against his alien counterpart, and when M.O.G.U.E.R.A. managed to split into two, it joined forces with Godzilla to seriously wound SpaceGodzilla. The final blow was delivered by several blasts of Godzilla’s atomic breath, but the specter of another space-born creature still lingered ominously. Regrettably, this marked SpaceGodzilla’s solitary cinematic appearance, as the Heisei era concluded two years later with “Godzilla vs. Destroyah” in 1996. Now, it seems that he is poised for a grand return, and his character fits perfectly within the MonsterVerse.
Why SpaceGodzilla Makes Sense for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova
The Kaiju’s Return Marks a Break from What the Previous MonsterVerse Movie Did
In many aspects, SpaceGodzilla seems ideally suited as an adversary for the next chapter of the MonsterVerse, taking into account the direction the previous film took with the franchise. Unlike Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, which introduced entirely new enemies in Skar King and Shimo, not derived from pre-existing Toho kaiju, the upcoming movie might lean more towards Godzilla rather than Kong, considering Kong’s son, Suko, played a significant role in the story. With Godzilla’s roar echoing at the end of the new film’s trailer, it seems probable that this installment will heavily feature Godzilla. If so, having a villain similar to Godzilla, like SpaceGodzilla, could provide an intriguing way to delve into this concept, as it would follow the pattern seen in (which featured Mechagodzilla as the antagonist). However, given that there are no Biollante or comparable creatures in the MonsterVerse at present, adjustments will probably be made to SpaceGodzilla’s origins. Nevertheless, SpaceGodzilla could play a crucial role in developing themes that will eventually conclude the MonsterVerse saga and its interpretation of Godzilla himself.
In essence, SpaceGodzilla is genetically linked to Godzilla, much like how a concept might materialize in reality. It’s worth noting that Suko may or may not be Godzilla’s biological offspring. However, it’s likely that the MonsterVerse will introduce its unique interpretation of Godzilla’s son at some point, possibly blending aspects of Heisei era Little Godzilla/Godzilla Junior, Minilla/Minya, and even Godzooky. This would allow for an examination of Godzilla’s legacy, particularly if this new monster, like its predecessors, is generally more amicable towards humans.
Conversely, SpaceGodzilla embodies the destructive chaos often associated with Godzilla, being a purely malevolent creature indifferent to all life forms. After this movie, the narrative could delve deeper into these themes through Kong and Godzilla in several more films, culminating in a storyline similar to that of Godzilla vs. Destroyah.
In this upcoming movie, there’s a possibility that Godzilla could be replaced by his son, while Kong might find solace in Suko within the hollow earth. The malevolent counterpart of Godzilla is set to play a significant role in the narrative, and reintroducing him will bring him back to the big screen after more than three decades since SpaceGodzilla first appeared on screens in the 1990s. The character has mainly been limited to obscure appearances, with only a few instances in the IDW Godzilla comic books. With Ghidorah having been introduced and eliminated, SpaceGodzilla seems primed for use as a formidable, extraterrestrial Titan, much like Ghidorah who embodied a threat from beyond Earth. This could spark interest for a potential MonsterVerse film similar to “Destroy All Monsters,” where alien invaders attempt to conquer Earth by controlling the various kaiju. If introduced first, SpaceGodzilla might serve as the foundation for such a movie, but only time will tell if this becomes a reality.
