Following Square Enix’s decision to scrap the Missing-Link mobile game, fans eagerly awaited updates about Kingdom Hearts 5. True to form, Square Enix shared some game screenshots, hinting that a trailer might be forthcoming as well. The cancellation of the mobile game was regrettable, but if it means more attention on this fourth installment, we’re all for it!
In the images revealed, Kingdom Hearts 4 appears to be a true next-generation title. To be honest, the games in the PS5 and Xbox Series era haven’t shown much of an upgrade from their predecessors. However, when you see this stunning game, it really takes your breath away. It doesn’t mean that other games lack appeal, but this one sets a new standard.
It appears to be the Sora model, the unsettling Heartless characters, or perhaps the lighting, but whatever it is, this game seems significantly better visually compared to Kingdom Hearts 3. Even those who criticized KH3 can’t deny its visual appeal today, so enhancing on those aspects is quite an accomplishment. We don’t want to come off as graphics enthusiasts, but we must admit that the game’s appearance is truly impressive.
In a move that might irk some fans, this new release bears striking similarities to Grand Theft Auto 6 in terms of visual appeal. Despite their distinct artistic approaches, they both seem fitting for the PS5 Pro and the as-yet-unnamed next Xbox. It wouldn’t be shocking if these games were remastered for the next generation console.
It’s intriguing to ponder how Kingdom Hearts 4 might utilize this technology and impact its gameplay. Unlike Kingdom Hearts 3, where Sora couldn’t work with his entire party simultaneously, now he can have all of his team members at once without needing to replace one for a Disney guest star. This game also boasted some of the series’ finest movement options, another significant enhancement.
As a devoted Kingdom Hearts fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating a new game since the release of KH3, and it feels like an eternity. The absence of additional games in the series, excluding the rhythm title, has left us yearning for more. What makes this wait even tougher is that these side games were our source of refining and reusing those engaging mechanics we loved so much. Yes, some side games had stories that could be considered filler, but they still offered a touch of plot advancement, which was always welcome.
I’m eagerly anticipating that the delay for Kingdom Hearts 4 will prove to be worth it, as I believe the developers at Square Enix have given serious consideration to criticisms leveled against the third game. Despite the third game being my personal favorite, there were clear areas for improvement in that iteration. Let’s cross our fingers that they focused more on refining the gameplay and progression rather than just enhancing the visuals, as these aspects seemed to hinder the last game’s overall experience.
As a gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Kingdom Hearts 4 includes an Encanto world. Can you imagine the fun of having Sora stumble upon that magical family and witness them singing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”? It would definitely be a memorable and quirky scene!
