Jasmila Zbanic is considering creating a sequel to her Academy Award-nominated drama Quo Vadis, Aida?, a film that depicts the Srebrenica massacre. This new work will delve into the events following the horrific genocide that occurred in Bosnia during 1995.
As I dive into “Quo Vadis, Aida? – The Missing Piece,” I’ll follow the tale of women left in the wake of the horrific Bosnian War atrocities. I, much like Jasna Djuricic, was a local translator for the peacekeeping forces, trying desperately to shield my loved ones from the brutal massacre that claimed over 7,000 men and boys. Now, as Aida, I’ll spearhead the effort to uncover the truth behind these heinous acts and bring those responsible to justice.
In 2020, the movie titled “Quo Vadis, Aida?” made its debut at the Venice Film Festival. It later received two BAFTA nominations, won the best film award at the European Film Awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best International Feature Film. Damir Ibrahimovic from the Bosnian production company Deblokada will be producing “Quo Vadis, Aida? – The Missing Piece,” in a joint collaboration with Erik Hemmendorff from Sweden’s Plattform Produktion and Swedish film financier Film i Väst.
At Film i Väst’s yearly Cannes film festival gathering on Thursday, the project was one that was presented.
Notable additions to the company’s forthcoming lineup include “Good Mothers,” a small-town melodrama reminiscent of “Pretty Little Liars,” helmed by Amalie Næsby Fick and adapted from a best-selling novel by award-winning director and screenwriter Nikolaj Arcel (“The Promised Land,” “A Royal Affair”). The film boasts Danish stars Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Borgen,” “Westworld”) and Sofie Gråbøl (“The Killing”). Another offering is the animated feature “Dante” by Swedish director Linda Hambäck (“The Ape Star”), featuring a voice cast led by Stellan Skarsgård (“Andor,” “Dune”) and David Dencik (“A Royal Affair”). Lastly, there’s “Bad Moon Rising,” a romantic drama directed by Erik Poppe (“The Emigrants”), marking the first-ever original screenplay by Nobel Prize-winning writer Jon Fosse.
Other projects Film i Väst is supporting include “Bloody Men,” a literary adaptation from Jens Sjögren (known for “I Am Zlatan”), starring Swedish actors Aliette Opheim (“Black Crab”) and Filip Berg (“Whisky on the Rocks”); “Burden of Justice,” helmed by Lisa Linnertorp, director of “Threesome”; and “Will You Care if I Die?”, a film adaptation of Nicolas Lunabba’s bestselling autobiography, directed by Rojda Sekersöz, known for Netflix’s “Young Royals.
Previously, it was announced that Film i Väst had joined the production of “Fjord,” marking the English-language debut of Palme d’Or winning Romanian director Christian Mungiu (known for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”). This film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Neon has already purchased the rights to distribute this movie in North America before its release.
This year, the film production company based in Trollhättan, Sweden, is sponsoring three films competing at Cannes: “The History of Sound” directed by Oliver Hermanus, featuring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor; Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” starring Reinsve and Skarsgård; and Tarik Saleh’s “Eagles of the Republic,” with Fares Fares in the lead role.
