Why I’m nervous about the King of the Hill reboot

Nowadays, there’s nothing more divisive than bringing back an old favorite TV show – it either sparks great excitement or elicits groans. I’m not suggesting they can’t work, as I am a devoted fan of the 2017 version of DuckTales, which I firmly believe sets a standard for how to reboot a series effectively. This is why I feel a mix of apprehension and anticipation about the return of King of the Hill this summer.

Many of these feelings stem from my deep affection for the television series, “King of the Hill.” This program is one of my all-time favorites, and even though I didn’t become acquainted with it until later in life, it has since become a beloved staple in our household. Just last month, during a stressful hospital stay for my stepmom, we turned to “King of the Hill” for comfort and entertainment on my laptop in her room. The series is our default choice when we need something amusing to watch. I frequently find myself quoting lines from it, and honestly, I can’t help but yearn to obtain THAT Bobby Hill purse as a personal keepsake.

I’m a bit reluctant, as I hold a deep affection for the original series, and I’m aware that alterations are inevitable.

One thing that crosses my mind is: How do you plan to manage the original cast members? Brittany Murphy passed away some time ago, and her energetic exclamation, “IT’S THE MANGER BABIES!” will be deeply missed by me. Johnny Hardwick recorded for a few episodes before his passing, but it leaves the rest of the series in limbo. I also ponder if they would consider recasting Kahn, Minh, and Connie Souphanousinphone, who were portrayed by non-Laotian actors in the original series. As a strong advocate for recasting characters, I would argue for these changes. To me, continuing the characters is one of the finest ways to pay tribute to the original creators.

Regardless of my concerns, I wholeheartedly trust and am confident in these creators. Without a doubt, if there’s a team renowned for delivering thought-provoking social commentary about our world, it’s King of the Hill. It’s consistently been bold in its humor while conveying meaningful messages through beloved characters. At its core, it has a deep emotional resonance that I firmly believe in. In truth, my faith lies in this.

Although I’m apprehensive about the upcoming “King of the Hill” reboot, I can’t help but feel a tinge of anticipation as well. I realize that changes are inevitable, but I eagerly look forward to reconnecting with the Hill family, the Gribbles, Boomhauer, and seeing if good fortune has finally come Bill’s way. This summer, you can find me glued to Hulu, both hopeful and cautious.
