Court Throws Out “Potentially Libelous” Taylor Swift Extortion Claims From Justin Baldoni’s Team

The attorney for a federal judge has advised Justin Baldoni’s legal team to avoid tactics that could possibly be aimed at generating controversy from allegations that might be libelous and have not yet been proven.

On Thursday, Judge Lewis Liman removed from the case records a letter written by Bryan Freedman, representing Baldoni, which accused Blake Lively’s legal team of attempting to blackmail Taylor Swift. Freedman argued that Lively’s attorney contacted an attorney at the law firm Venable, who represents Swift, and threatened to disclose private text messages in Lively’s possession if Swift did not release a public statement supporting the actress.

Advises counsel that continued misuse of court records could result in penalties being imposed,” Liman wrote.

In a letter submitted on Wednesday, Freedman stated that Swift’s representative had acknowledged and responded to inappropriate and potentially extortionate threats in at least one written communication sent to Lively’s legal team. He requested access to these communications as they would support claims that Lively is allegedly intimidating and coercing witnesses in the ongoing legal dispute. Further details were not disclosed, but an unnamed source is believed to possess reliable information about the matter.

Michael Gottlieb, a lawyer for Lively, denied the accusations.

In Thursday’s decision, the court emphasized its power to dismiss any submissions in the case that are deemed “inappropriate” or “unwarranted.” He contended that the letter incites media frenzy by implying that Lively and her legal team were trying to blackmail a well-known celebrity. Leaving the filing intact would transform the court’s records into a “libelous resource for the press,” Liman argued in his writing.

In simpler terms, Lively’s legal representatives claim that Baldoni’s lawyers submitted a letter with defaming statements about the actress to cleanse those accusations through the court case. However, under New York law, media outlets are protected from legal repercussions when reporting on court filings and proceedings.

A representative for Lively declined to comment.

The letter was placed in a folder several days following Taylor Swift’s summons by Baldoni’s legal representatives. Her role in the ongoing lawsuits stems from an occurrence when Blake Lively invited the director of “It Ends With Us” to her New York City residence in 2023 for talks about revisions to a rooftop scene at the film’s start. Upon arrival, Baldoni claimed he was confronted by Ryan Reynolds, Lively’s husband, and Taylor Swift, as per the lawsuit, which references exchanges with the name “Taylor.” The high-profile figures are said to have commended Lively’s portrayal of the scene, supposedly forcing Baldoni to approve the modifications.
