Throughout the series, Maggie evolves from a hesitant young woman to someone prepared to go to any lengths to shield those dear to her. She forms an exceptional romantic pair in “The Walking Dead,” and this relationship significantly influences how her life unfolds and her responses to the ever-changing world and individuals she encounters. Although Maggie becomes harder over time, she never compromises on her morality, demonstrating compassion and forbearance towards those who deserve it.

Following the devastating fire that destroyed Maggie’s family home at the conclusion of Season 2, the survivors are compelled to find a new place to establish their home. Maggie chooses to accompany the group, which leads her on a journey from being an isolated religious farm girl to emerging as a powerful community leader, formidable walker fighter, and exceptional mother, all while traveling with Glenn (Steven Yeun).

Her life changes at the Prison

The group who made it through alive spent an entire winter traveling along the road before stumbling upon a prison. They clean out any remaining walkers and decide to call this place their new home. However, during one of Merle’s supply runs, he encounters Maggie and Glenn and brings them to the nearby town Woodbury, delivering them to the Governor. This ruthless leader covets the resources that the prison offers for himself and interrogates them relentlessly. Maggie ultimately reveals the location of the prison to save Glenn. Rick comes to their rescue, but this kidnapping sets off a conflict between Woodbury and the Prison, leading to an eventual war.

The conflict unfolds in two distinct phases: Towards the end of Season 3, when the Governor attempts an invasion of the prison, his troops surprisingly don’t engage, leading him to betray them instead. The survivors are taken in, and peace seems to prevail until Season 4, when the Governor resurfaces with a determined army. During this second confrontation, Hershel (played by Scott Wilson) is captured by the Governor, ultimately losing his life when Rick decides not to surrender the prison. Maggie participates in the battle, eventually leading to the Governor’s demise but also causing the destruction of the prison, compelling the group to once more take to the open road.

During this period, Maggie experienced some favorable situations. Following their rescue, Glenn proposes to her, and they quickly decide to consider themselves married. When a disease spreads through the Prison, Maggie plays a crucial role in keeping Glenn alive, even when they’re surrounded by walkers. She even suggests having a child, feeling that the Prison could be a secure place for conception. However, despite their belief that she might be pregnant at one stage, this doesn’t turn out to be true.

Alexandria provides a new start

On their journey once more, Maggie and Glenn find themselves split into distinct parties. Despite not being apart for long, they quickly found themselves in danger again as they were captured and incarcerated at Terminus towards the end of Season 4. Initially meant to be a secure haven, those who took over Terminus twisted it into something much darker, even resorting to cannibalism of other survivors. However, thanks to some well-timed explosives, the group managed to escape in Season 5. To date, Maggie has endured significant hardships, including her father’s death, kidnapping by the Governor, and a harrowing ordeal where she narrowly escaped being killed and consumed by fellow survivors.

Following Terminus, Maggie finds herself bereft of the last family member she had left: her sister Beth (Emily Kinney). With Beth’s demise, it becomes evident that Maggie, who was portrayed as quite religious in Season 2, has grown less devout. Her experiences during the apocalypse and the hardships she’s endured seem to have toughened her significantly. This transformation in Maggie’s character is crucial for her actions later in the series, making her more willing to take risks.

In the upcoming location, the survivor finds themselves in Alexandria, an area that’s part of the Alexandria Safe Zone, situated not far from Washington D.C. Upon arrival, Maggie adapts swiftly, contributing to the cultivation of food crops and finding her bearings as they no longer need to be on high alert. Despite the sense of comfort they experience in Alexandria, it fails to shield them from threats like marauders such as the Wolves and hordes of walkers. As Maggie grows more accustomed to this new phase, she and Glenn grow closer, eventually leading to Maggie’s pregnancy. However, their life takes another turn when she falls ill, prompting the group to seek aid at Hilltop by the end of Season 6.

Hilltop becomes her new home

The journey to Hilltop takes a dangerous turn as Maggie and others are abducted by the Saviors, a ruthless group headed by infamous “The Walking Dead” antagonist Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan). This event marks one of the most gruesome deaths in the series at the onset of Season 7, when Glenn is brutally killed. This act of violence ignites a thirst for vengeance within Maggie, pushing her to seek retribution against Negan and the Saviors. Notably, this isn’t the first time she has harbored a desire to take a life out of self-interest; however, this time, it’s tinged with the pain stemming from the losses of her loved ones.

As a devoted fan, I find myself recounting the events where The Saviors, much like other adversaries we’ve encountered previously, attempt to seize control over more settlements, such as Alexandria and Hilltop, during Seasons 7 and 8. In this struggle, Maggie stands firm, offering aid to Hilltop throughout these challenging times. Despite her unrelenting stance towards Negan, she extends mercy to those Saviors who choose to yield or switch sides. However, when the conflict ends, it’s not Maggie who makes the ultimate decision regarding Negan’s fate, and this leaves her displeased with Rick’s choice to imprison him instead of executing him. At this juncture, she continues to nurture her plans for revenge, and Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Jesus (Tom Payne) become privy to her secret ambition.

After all that transpired, she remains at Hilltop, contributing to the community’s growth and establishing a lasting presence by burying Glenn there. During the time leap from Seasons 8 to 9, she gives birth to her son, whom she names Hershel, in honor of her deceased father. When she assumes leadership over Gregory (Xander Berkeley) in Season 9, she is compelled to execute him after he attempts to assassinate her. Though she’s mended somewhat, and remains the compassionate person fans are accustomed to, she initially shuns Alexandria due to Negan’s imprisonment there, as she hasn’t fully forgiven her anger over Glenn’s demise.

After spotting Negan in his cell, she gradually grasps Rick’s rationale behind allowing the villain to endure the consequences of his actions. Even though she remains distraught over her husband’s demise, she starts to relinquish the belief that eliminating Negan would bring her solace. Rick’s “death” in Season 9 aids her in finding closure on several matters, including her sense of guilt for what transpires to Rick, as she was reluctant to abandon her vengeful pursuit. The ongoing discord within the communities contributes to Maggie’s choice to resign as Hilltop’s leader, with this tension playing a role in her decision.

As a gamer, I found myself joining forces with Maggie in Season 8, meeting Georgie (Jayne Atkinson), a key member of a team dedicated to sharing knowledge essential for society’s revival post-apocalypse, and fostering ties with other communities. In Season 9, I tagged along with Hershel (Peyton Lockridge) as Maggie decided to depart from Hilltop, embarking on a journey to aid Georgie and her group in their mission. This adventure saw us frequently hitting the road, uncovering more about the current world state throughout Seasons 9 and 10, eventually leading to my temporary departure from the series.

She returns to fight the Whisperers and aligns with Negan

In Season 10, upon Maggie’s return, she encounters a letter from Carol (Melissa McBride) detailing the troubles the communities are facing with the Whisperers. Driven by her resolve to assist, she returns to aid them in their struggle. The specifics of Maggie’s time on the road with Georgia during her absence remain undisclosed, leaving a tantalizing enigma that could potentially be unveiled in “The Walking Dead: Dead City”.

In Season 11, she resumes her role and starts developing a cautious relationship with Negan.
