Huma Qureshi has solidified her impact in the realm of digital entertainment, notably through her captivating portrayal of Rani Bharti in the series Maharani. In a recent discussion, she pondered over how the advent of OTT platforms has opened fresh avenues for actors such as herself. Yet, she also shed light on a significant concern within the industry – the ongoing issue of pay disparity. She emphasized that despite Maharani being among the most-viewed productions, she is not compensated equally to her male co-stars, some of whom receive remuneration as high as 450 crores in Indian Rupees.
During a chat with India Today, actress Huma Qureshi praised the success of “Maharani,” describing it as both highly viewed and deeply cherished. Yet, she openly discussed the persisting inequality in earnings between genders within the streaming platform industry.
Though she heads the television series as its principal figure, she disclosed that her paychecks fall short compared to what male counterparts earn for comparable parts. She voiced her discontent over the persistent inequality, where even when a woman powers the success of a program, men continue to receive much higher wages.
Regarding whispers in the industry suggesting that some male actors are receiving up to Rs 45 crores for OTT roles, she raised doubts about the fairness of such a significant disparity in their earnings.
Regarding persistent wage disparities within the field, Huma Qureshi acknowledged that a definitive reason is seldom disclosed, stating instead, “That’s just how it is.” However, she maintains optimism that ongoing discussions about the matter might eventually spark transformation.
In my expertise as a lifestyle connoisseur, I’ve observed a significant shift in the entertainment industry. Instead of settling for run-of-the-mill content, creators are now striving to bring forth stories that resonate deeply. This change is not only refreshing but also inspiring, as it offers opportunities to talented individuals like Jaideep Ahlawat, Shefali Shah, and myself. The advent of streaming platforms has indeed been a game-changer, opening up new avenues for us to shine and tell stories that truly matter.
Apart from her thoughts, Huma expressed worry that streaming content seems to be getting repetitive. She strongly suggested that innovation should be prioritized in storytelling to maintain the field fresh and significant.
In her professional role, Huma Qureshi is gearing up for a return as Rani Bharti in the upcoming fourth series of Maharani. This popular show, which has already achieved considerable success across its first three seasons, explores the political and social terrain of Bihar. Notably, the plotline also borrows elements from real-life incidents, lending a sense of reality and richness to the story.
