The popular superhero genre remains captivating, and everyone eagerly awaits what DC co-CEO James Gunn plans for the new DC Universe (DCU). Known as “Gods and Monsters,” the initial lineup of projects will start with a Superman film in theaters. Anticipation for the upcoming DC movie is palpable, and James Gunn has recently dispelled rumors regarding Lex Luthor. As a fan, I must admit that this reassurance is welcome.
Our understanding of Superman is rather scant, mostly derived from brief glimpses. Consequently, fans are using their imagination to bridge the gaps, leading to numerous theories and speculations circulating online. In a conversation on Threads, Gunn clarified that the Superman cast won’t be exploring origin stories, but also hinted at us not encountering a specific Lex Luthor portrayed by Nicholas Hoult as he phrased it: “We won’t delve into the Superman cast’s origins, and we won’t see a particular version of Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor.
There are no origins but Lex is not President.
Here it is. It’s yet to be revealed how or why Lex Luthor might obstruct Superman in the upcoming blockbuster, but he won’t hold the presidency’s complete power. Instead, we appear to be dealing with a private citizen boasting an immense amount of resources at his disposal.

The entire trailer for the movie Superman has been released, showcasing the talented cast that director James Gunn assembled. The clip is exciting, although much about the plot remains mysterious. The story seems to focus on Superman’s moral compass, but details about his relationship with Lex are unclear. For those interested, you can watch the short footage again below:
James Gunn selected Nicholas Hoult to play Lex Luthor due to his intense display of animosity during auditions, suggesting that the X-Men veteran will undoubtedly bring maximum intensity to his role in Superman. It appears that he’ll likely serve as a key antagonist not just for this movie but throughout the entire DC Universe given that Gunn and his team are emphasizing serialized storytelling.
So far, only brief glimpses of Hoult as Lex Luthor have been shown in the movie, with the producers keeping the film’s details under wraps. As we approach the release of Superman in July, we might expect to see more of him. The decision to hold back on a full-length trailer until recently seems deliberate.
Even though the DC Universe is just starting out, we’ve already noticed connections between its initial ventures. The voice actor from Creature Commandos, Karl Urban, is transitioning to live action as Rick Flag Sr., a character who will appear in Superman, and also in Season 2 of Peacemaker. This suggests that the storyline potential seems almost limitless.
In the summer of 2025, Superman is set to grace our screens on July 11th, a part of that year’s cinema lineup. We can only anticipate the portrayal of Lex Luthor by Nicholas Hoult at this point.
