The terrifying horror series on Prime Video titled The Bondsman, featuring the talented Kevin Bacon, has sadly been axed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The premier of “Bondsman” aired its single season on Amazon Prime Video on April 3, featuring eight episodes. In its initial week (March 31-April 6), it ranked No. 9 on Nielsen’s streaming charts for that period with a total viewing time of 563 million minutes. Unfortunately, it fell off the charts and failed to reappear in the Top 10 afterward.
In this show, Kevin Bacon plays Hub Halloran, a past country music sensation and ex-bounty hunter with a bloody past, who is granted another chance at life when the Devil brings him back to earth to capture demons that have broken free from Hell’s grasp. Joining him in the cast are Jennifer Nettles, Damon Herriman, Beth Grant, and Maxwell Jenkins.
Critic Angie Han from THR praised Bacon’s performance in the series, noting his knack for delivering the show’s humor with a well-placed grunt and its emotional scenes with a fitting hangdog expression. With his charm, he comes close to making this peculiar blend of sounds, melodies, and supernatural gore harmonious, purely by using his strong determination.
Han noted, “Beyond Bacon’s portrayal, the horror comedy is somewhat uneven – intermittently humorous but seldom as funny, heartfelt, or surprising as it aspires to be. It never quite lives up to the promise of its intriguing premise and leaves one hoping for a more memorable experience.
David Grainger developed the series and functioned as an executive producer in collaboration with Jason Blum, Jeremy Gold, Chris Dickie, Chris McCumber, Bacon, Paul E. Shapiro, and Erik Oleson (who additionally serves as the showrunner). Erik Holmberg holds the position of co-executive producer. The production company behind The Bondsman includes Blumhouse Television, Marker 96, CrimeThink Production Company, and Amazon MGM Studios.
Oleson expressed to THR that Bondsman was intended to be an entertaining series to watch, produce, and write. Upon discovering that Bacon showed interest in the show, he excitedly responded, “Wow, I get to work with Kevin Bacon on a demon-hunting project with Blumhouse? Absolutely, sign me up!
There are numerous demon hunting series, movies, and other productions available. It’s a genre of its own, isn’t it? However, what sets our show apart is the blending of this theme with elements from family dramas, Appalachian noir, country music narratives, and a surprising twist – Kevin Bacon using chainsaws to destroy demons! This unique blend aims to provide an entertaining, original experience. You never know if you’ll be laughing, screaming, or exclaiming in shock while watching it with someone else, saying, ‘That was fun!’
