In James Gunn’s revamped DC universe, fans can look forward to seeing iconic, powerful DC villains in fresh interpretations. This updated universe, different from Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe (DCEU), will also introduce nine superheroes that were absent before. Furthermore, the reboot will feature a variety of Marvel actors playing both heroes and villains in this new realm.
In the opening chapter of the DCU saga titled “Gods and Monsters”, the collection of antagonists presents an intriguing blend of established figures and brand-new characters taken directly from the comic books, including Lex Luthor, The Engineer, and Clayface.
Every Confirmed Villain in James Gunn’s DC Reboot
Lex Luthor
In a forthcoming DC film set for release in 2025, Nicholas Hoult will make his debut as the infamous villain, Lex Luthor, marking him among the confirmed principal antagonists. The promotion of the David Corenswet-led movie has hinted that Luthor harbors intense animosity towards Superman, vowing to use all his resources to vanquish him and demonstrate that he is not mankind’s protector.
In the official merchandise for Superman, a depiction of Lex Luthor’s battle suit was unveiled, hinting at a confrontation where he will face off directly against the Man of Steel in the upcoming film.
In the grand scheme of the DC Universe, there isn’t a lot of information available regarding Lex’s specific role. However, given his deep connections to the Superman mythos, it seems likely that he will take on a significant part in the future of the franchise.
Ultraman
In the revamped version of Superman, Ultraman stands out as a secretive antagonist, veiled in enigma.
The character is a shrouded figure dressed in black, unfazed by engaging in combat with the Man of Steel. Some speculate that Ultraman might be the film’s hidden main antagonist, and he could potentially be working on Lex Luthor’s orders to permanently defeat Superman.
In the universe of DC Comics, there exists a character known as Ultraman, who is essentially a counterpart to Superman from an alternate reality called Earth-3. Notably, he was the head of a malevolent group that mirrors the Justice League, which they call the Crime Syndicate.
Hammer of Boravia
In the world of Superman, The Hammer of Boravia is among the first villains conceived by James Gunn. As one of the primary antagonists in the upcoming DC film, this character showcases an impressive physical power and the ability to fly, making him a formidable adversary for the Man of Steel.
The most recent preview depicts the Hammer of Boravia engaging in combat with Superman within Metropolis. The immense devastation resulting from their encounter underscores the significant danger this adversary poses to the cherished DC superhero.
The Engineer
In the 2025 DC film, a fresh antagonist, The Engineer (played by María Gabriela De Faría), is set to pose a significant challenge to Superman. Previews suggest that this character will target the Fortress of Solitude, serving as Lex Luthor’s enforcer.
Notably, The Engineer is one of the original members of The Authority, a forceful group of superheroes similar to ‘The Boys’. Consequently, it’s plausible that The Engineer will live through the occurrences in ‘Superman’, subsequently appearing in ‘The Authority’ towards the end of DC Universe’s lineup of upcoming projects.
Krem of the Yellow Hills
In the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” Matthias Schoenaerts will first appear in DCU as the malevolent Krem from the Yellow Hills, a skilled Kingsagent warrior, marauder, and hitman who develops into Supergirl’s adversary in the comic books.
As a ruthless villain, Krem is an expert swordsman who can also use the bow and arrow as a weapon.
Lobo
Following his role as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, Jason Momoa is set to breathe life into the character Lobo in James Gunn’s DC revamp. He is slated to first appear in the movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“.
Hailing from the planet Czarnia, Lobo goes by the profession of a mercenary and bounty hunter. He boasts extraordinary physical power, rapid recovery abilities, exceptional marksmanship skills, and strategic brilliance.
Lobo possesses the strength to hold his own against characters like Superman and Supergirl, demonstrating that he is a significant danger in the broader DC Universe.
Sinestro
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that I, Ulrich Thomsen, have signed up for James Gunn’s DC Universe as the formidable character, Sinestro. Following in the footsteps of Lex Luthor, I’ll be making my mark as one of the main antagonists in the HBO Max series, Lanterns. Can’t wait to bring this iconic villain to life!
Sinestro, who possesses a menacing power ring, was formerly part of the Green Lantern Corps. Known for his ruthless leadership and tactical genius, he poses a significant threat not only to Hal Jordan and John Stewart but also to other active heroes within the DC universe.
White Dragon
It’s been confirmed that the character Auggie Smith, also known as the White Dragon, will reappear in the second season of “Peacemaker”. In the first season, the White Dragon met his end in a dramatic and heart-wrenching confrontation with his own son, Christopher Smith, who is known as Peacemaker.
Even though the character (who might be Auggie Smith in disguise) has passed away, there is confirmation that he will make a comeback. It’s plausible that one of Auggie’s followers could be behind the mask, or perhaps some intriguing interdimensional maneuvers are involved, paving the way for his reappearance.
There’s a chance the White Dragon might manifest in a vision for John Cena’s character, Peacemaker.
White Rabbit
In the second season of Peacemaker, a new antagonist makes an appearance. This character is portrayed by Brey Noelle and is known as the White Rabbit, or Jaina Hudson.
In DC Comics, the White Rabbit is a Batman villain who has the power of self-duplication.
It was made clear by Noelle on Instagram that she’ll take on the role of the antagonist in “Peacemaker” Season 2’s premiere episode.
Clayface
Following his animated portrayal in “Creature Commandos”, the notorious Clayface is set to star in a live-action film for the very first time. This upcoming movie will serve as his solo debut, making him the initial villain to headline a movie under the DC Studios banner, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
In his upcoming film, the backstory of the villain who can change shapes will delve into the terrifying aspects of horror. This storyline promises to provide insights into how he became a villain.
Ilana Rostovic
In the initial DC Universe project titled “Creature Commandos,” additional antagonists are unveiled, confirmed to belong to a broader universe. Among them is Ilana Rostovic, who serves as the ruling monarch in the nation of Pokolistan.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but notice that despite her sugary-sweet exterior, this woman is a relentless and cruel authority figure, driven by an insatiable appetite for power. That’s why she’s a prime focus for the fearless Creature Commandos, who are battling not only her but also the wicked sorceress Circe.
However, the character died in the end after she was killed by The bride.
Circe
In the comic book series “Creature Commandos”, the character Circe (portrayed by Anya Chalotra) is a notorious enemy of Wonder Woman who left a lasting impression. Circe shared an ominous prophecy with Amanda Waller, predicting that Ilana Rostovic would lead to the downfall of heroes in a catastrophic future event.
Since Circe lived through the incidents depicted in the “Creature Commandos”, it’s quite probable that she will reappear in upcoming DC Universe projects.
Rupert Thorne
Rupert Thorne is a lesser-known antagonist and criminal mastermind hailing from Gotham City, who made an appearance in the comic series called “Creature Commandos“.
In time, Dr. Phosphorus (also known as Alex Sartorius) became entangled in his own origin tale. His adversary had his subordinates force Dr. Phosphorus into the same nuclear fusion experiments he was working on, to give an illusion of suicide. However, this scheme failed miserably when a freshly-minted Dr. Phosphorus ended up killing him and his henchmen instead.
