Angelina Jolie attends the Cannes Film Festival this year, not for the screening of a movie, but rather to fulfill her official responsibilities due to the long-standing and luxurious partnership with the festival’s sponsor, Chopard.
As a dedicated admirer, I’m thrilled to share that this year’s esteemed Oscar winner graciously accepted the role as Chopard’s Godmother. This prestigious position had her officiating over the glamorous Trophée Chopard dinner on Friday at Carlton Beach, and presenting awards to two rising talents in the film industry. The recipients of this year’s accolades were French actress Marie Colomb and breakout British star Finn Bennett, who recently captivated audiences in Alex Garland’s “Warfare” and shared the screen with Jodie Foster in “True Detective: Night Country.” I can hardly wait to see what these promising stars will achieve next!
The awards were presented at the usual glamorous ceremony, graced by the presence of Cannes Film Festival President Iris Knobloch, General Delegate Thierry Frémaux, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, members of the jury, and prominent guests. On this particular Friday evening, the event welcomed Quentin Tarantino (sitting opposite Jolie), Carla Bruni, jury members Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and President Juliette Binoche.
The godmother frequently provides opening remarks, and Jolie skillfully utilized the opportunity to express her admiration for global cinema, all the while emphasizing her commitment to humanitarian work. She also drew focus to heartbreaking tales of women who perished during wars and conflicts overseas.
Jolie expressed her passion for international films, stating that they transport us to different countries, offer glimpses into personal experiences, even in war zones, enabling us to relate and empathize. She emphasized the importance of making international cinema more understandable and welcomed any efforts towards this end. Jolie acknowledged that artists worldwide often face limitations in expressing their stories, with some even losing their lives, such as Fatima Hassouna in Gaza, Shaden Gardood in Sudan, and Victoria Amelina in Ukraine, among many others who should be here today. She stressed the immense gratitude we owe to those risking their lives to share their tales and perspectives, for they enrich our knowledge and promote growth.
Jolie went on to explain that the gathering in Cannes was not just about glamour, but about connection. “It’s not about the red carpets, beautiful as they are, but it’s about connecting with each other through international cinema and being surrounded by creative individuals,” she said. “I am truly honored to be among so many talented artists from around the world, especially our honorees tonight, Finn Bennett and Mary Colon. You have both been recognized for your remarkable versatility, honesty, and empathy in your performances, and as promising new talents in global cinema. I want to thank you both for the impact you’ve already made on film and storytelling, and for all the creativity that lies ahead.

Accepting the award, Bennett expressed his gratitude towards his agent Bella Wingfield, whose faith in him continues to leave him astonished. He also thanked his “beautiful partner” Anna and Jolie. Bennett was profoundly and deeply moved to receive this accolade from such a respected actor and director. However, she is not just a renowned figure; her humanitarian and ecological efforts make her someone who stands on the correct side of history and will be recognized as such in the future.
Despite plans for Carla Bruni, an actress, singer, and former first lady of France, to end the night with a musical performance, it was unfortunately cancelled due to disturbing noise from a neighboring venue playing loud music over a bustling bar. Even after the musicians had taken their places on stage, Bruni decided to leave. Later, she expressed her displeasure towards the venue on Instagram and thanked Scheufele for the opportunity.
The wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy said, “When it was our turn to perform and present the Chopard awards, our neighbors unexpectedly started playing such loud music that we couldn’t even hear the names of the winners. We had rehearsed five or six songs for our guests and were eager to entertain this evening. However, our plans were ruined because Carlton Beach decided to throw a party without considering the artists next door or the importance of the Chopard trophies. I’d like to express my gratitude to Caroline Scheufele and invite her to have me sing whenever she desires, at no cost. Thank you, Carlton Beach, for the disruption you caused us.
