As a seasoned movie critic, I found myself expressing optimism to Jai Courtney, the charismatic Captain Boomerang from DCEU’s “The Suicide Squad,” about the possibility of his character making a comeback, despite seemingly meeting his end on-screen.
In conversation with Gunn, Courtney discussed their talk about Captain Boomerang’s future, emphasizing that Gunn indicated there was a chance for the character to reappear in some capacity. After perusing the script for the 2021 film, Courtney expressed to Gunn, “Hey, don’t forget about Boomerang – he’s pretty neat!
Courtney expressed, “‘James, it seems these rules aren’t entirely binding. Even if Boomerang perishes here, he might return someday, correct?’ I agreed wholeheartedly, feeling a spark of optimism. In the depths of my thoughts, there lingers a fervent wish that we may encounter Captain Boomerang once more.”
Courtney first portrayed George “Digger” Harkness (Captain Boomerang) in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” and later reprised the role alongside Joel Kinnaman, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis in its spin-off directed by Gunn.
It’s uncertain if Courtney will resume playing her character in the future, but there could be numerous chances for her role to surface in Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe. The revamped DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is set to commence in July with the new Superman film starring David Corenswet, which plans to introduce other characters like Mister Terrific and Hawkgirl as well.
Courtney might reappear in the DC Universe with a fresh character, despite his strong connection to Boomerang. Meanwhile, actors who once led the DCEU (Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ben Affleck) may no longer be associated with Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman respectively. However, Jason Momoa, a longtime star in the DCEU, has already secured a new role within Gunn’s DC Universe. He is set to appear in the upcoming “Supergirl” film featuring Milly Alcock.
The Suicide Squad Bridges The DCEU and Gunn’s DC Universe
Despite Boomerang’s unfortunate demise in James Gunn‘s film The Suicide Squad within the DC Extended Universe, it remains one of the few connections bridging the old and new DC Universe. Transitioning from the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn received unwavering backing from DC Studios. This enabled him to rework any DC property he desired, culminating in the standalone movie The Suicide Squad.
In contrast to most of the DCEU being discarded for the upcoming DCU timeline, the impacts of “The Suicide Squad” persist. For instance, Viola Davis and John Cena (playing Amanda Waller and Peacemaker respectively) have been officially confirmed to reprise their roles within the DCU. Interestingly, although “Peacemaker,” John Cena’s spin-off from “The Suicide Squad,” initially began in the DCEU, its second season will unfold within the new continuity of the DCU.
The Suicide Squad is now streaming on HBO Max.
