Heed this warning: The following discussion reveals plot points from episode 21 of Chicago PD‘s season 12. Deputy Chief Reid (performed by Shawn Hatosy) has accomplished something that no one else in Chicago PD has ever achieved before. While many have tried and failed to dismantle Sergeant Voight’s (Jason Beghe) Chicago Police Intelligence Unit, they have resorted to arresting and suspending team members to achieve their goal in the past. However, within just a few episodes, Reid has demonstrated his ability to carry out the task he intended to accomplish.
Although we’re not fond of Intelligence being disbanded, there’s no denying that it sets the stage for a much more engaging narrative. Now, everyone is eager to see how Voight can reinstate his team, help Burgess regain her position, and find a way out for Torres from his current predicament. The Chicago PD season 12 finale has a lot of unresolved issues, and it seems that not all will be wrapped up before the start of Chicago PD season 13.
Reid Successfully Disbanded The Intelligence Unit In Chicago PD Season 12
Voight And His Team Are No Longer Working Together
In the 12th season of “Chicago PD,” Reid has consistently shown himself to be someone who poses a risk to everyone around him. From the moment he revealed that he knew Torres was connected with his Confidential Informant and implied that Burgess had protected him, it became clear that this character could not be relied upon. However, Reid seemed cooperative with Voight as long as there was something beneficial in it for him.
It soon became evident to Reid that the powerful Intelligence chief, Voight, was involved in something underhanded, which eventually led him to plot his downfall. However, Voight’s influence is widespread as he has fingers in many pies, ensuring that everyone either owes him a favor or needs his protection. It was only a matter of time before Reid suspected Voight’s devious schemes.
Instead of waiting to be implicated, Deputy Chief Reid chose to take action ahead in Chicago PD season 12, episode 21. Given his rank and the intelligence he possessed, it was relatively straightforward for him to apprehend Torres and suspend Burgess without pay. Considering how Voight shielded them, it wouldn’t have required much effort for Deputy Chief Reid to persuade the higher-ups that Intelligence couldn’t be trusted.
Voight’s Intelligence Unit Has Never Been Disbanded Before
Many Have Tried And Failed To Take Down Voight
In the “One Chicago” series, it’s not the first instance where someone has aimed to undermine Voight, but it’s unique because this time, the entire unit was dismantled. Typically, it’s a criminal trying to eliminate Intelligence, understanding that their liberty is threatened. Occasionally, however, it’s other police force members who have gone after Intelligence.
In the seventh season of “Chicago PD,” Atwater chose to defy the Blue Line, pointing out rampant racial discrimination when systemic racism was particularly prevalent. This decision put him in danger during season 8, as he was almost left for dead after his calls for help were ignored. Despite tensions between Atwater and other cops against Intelligence, the unit itself wasn’t dismantled due to Voight’s support.
In Chicago PD season 5, another effort to retaliate against Voight took place by planting evidence on Olinsky (Elias Koteas). This led to Olinsky’s death in prison, and Voight embarked on a quest to clear his name. During this time, Voight was temporarily suspended, but luckily the rest of the Intelligence Unit managed to keep operating effectively.
How The Intelligence Unit Can Regain Their Positioning
Intelligence Will Need To Take Down Reid
If Voight had shared some insight with Intelligence earlier during Chicago PD season 12, perhaps they could have prevented this situation. Yet, it seems evident that Reid has been holding onto crucial information for months now. The sole method for Intelligence to reunite the team appears to be by apprehending Reid, which they plan to do in the season 12 finale of Chicago PD. However, they will do so without official authorization, as suggested by the synopsis.
ASA Chapman (Sarah Bues) is needed to bring Reid down, as she disagrees with Voight’s methods, which are considered immoral and illegal. However, under the current circumstances, this seems to be the only option Voight has left. Unfortunately, following the right path won’t help at this stage.
A powerful strategy to undermine Reid could involve uniting everyone whom Reid may have compromised. This tactic would provide a shield against the deputy chief, who might retaliate if he persists in feeling threatened. However, this task is challenging, but the payoff will be significant as it could reunite Intelligence and bring Burgess back to the team. Once that’s accomplished, efforts can be directed towards freeing Torres from jail, which will be a more complex endeavor given his actual involvement in the crime he’s been accused of.
Intelligence’s Disbandment & Eventual Reinstatement Will Only Make Chicago PD More Interesting
The Trust With The Chicago PD Has Now Been Tested
It’s uncertain if all the issues in Chicago PD’s season 12 finale can be resolved. Some plotlines might carry over into the 13th season of the Dick Wolf universe series, particularly regarding Torres’ jail situation. Yet, even if everything is concluded by the end of the episode, future story arcs are expected to become more engaging.
As a film critic, I must say that the bond between the team at PD has been shattered. Regardless of Reid’s questionable actions, he managed to apprehend Torres for an authentic crime. Burgess even lent a hand in concealing this misdeed. This revelation is bound to stir reactions among viewers, regardless of Reid’s tarnished reputation. Consequently, the public will continue to scrutinize any further moves made by Intelligence, eager to uncover more truths.
Starting with season 13 of “Chicago PD,” the Intelligence unit will have to be model citizens, strictly adhering to regulations for a while. This could make apprehending criminals and uncovering truths a tad more challenging. However, this situation might spark some intriguing plotlines when “Chicago PD” resumes.
