Four years after his on-screen death, actor Jai Courtney expressed interest in resurrecting his character, Captain Boomerang, for James Gunn’s DC Universe. Known for playing this role in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” Courtney starred alongside a notable cast that included Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, and Viola Davis. Courtney was one of the few actors who reprised their roles for its 2021 sequel titled “The Suicide Squad“. Interestingly, Kinnaman, Robbie, and Davis also returned to their original characters. In a surprising turn of events, Captain Boomerang met his on-screen demise during the film’s opening massacre.
As reported by Comic Book Resources, it was disappointing for Courtney to discover that his character’s demise would occur so soon in “The Suicide Squad”. Nevertheless, Gunn comforted the actor with the promise that Captain Boomerang could potentially reappear on the silver screen in the future. The actor himself clarified this point.
In a casual manner, I exclaimed, “Hey, Boomerang is awesome, isn’t it?” James replied, “Well, those rules aren’t always set in stone. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s the end of him, right?” To which I enthusiastically agreed, “Absolutely!
Courtney remains optimistic due to Gunn’s uplifting remarks. In conclusion, he expressed: “Deep within me, I harbor a wish that we might witness Boomerang again someday.
What Jai Courtney’s Comments About Captain Boomerang Mean
James Gunn’s DCU Shares Some Continuity With The Suicide Squad
For several years now, Courtney has consistently expressed his readiness to take on the role of Captain Boomerang once more. Previously, he mentioned that he’s merely waiting for a call from Warner Brothers and would gladly don the jacket again. He also playfully hinted at a potential Captain Boomerang spin-off by saying, “a boomerang always returns.” Given this history, it’s not shocking to learn that Courtney continues to be enthusiastic about joining the DC Universe once more.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the DC Universe is undergoing a significant transformation by rebooting the DC Extended Universe and recasting several key roles. However, there are some familiar faces who will continue to grace our screens in their respective roles. Notably, John Cena, Viola Davis, and the entire cast of “Peacemaker” are transitioning from the old franchise into the revamped one. Given that Courtney worked alongside Cena’s character in the previous series, it’s not entirely far-fetched to imagine him following suit.
Despite his character meeting a grim demise in “The Suicide Squad”, it’s worth noting that comic book characters often experience resurrection or the appearance of alternate universe versions. In this case, there’s a possibility that Courtney could return through one of these methods.
Our Take On Jai Courtney’s Comments About Captain Boomerang
The DCU Is A Fresh Start, But It Does Borrow DCEU Stars
In the new phase of the DC Universe (DCU), most roles are being recast. However, Gunn’s decision to retain some actors from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) increases the possibility that Courtney could return as Captain Boomerang. This is more plausible given that he has worked with Gunn before in a movie. The challenge lies in explaining away his death in “The Suicide Squad”. But since the DCU appears to be in a separate timeline, Courtney could resume the role by offering an explanation for his identical appearance compared to his counterpart in the DCEU.
