Mortal Kombat 2 Will Focus on Johnny Cage, Not Cole Young

From what we know so far about Mortal Kombat 2, it appears that Cole Young might not play a central role as the leading character. Given that the 2021 film presents Cole Young as the main protagonist of the revamped series, this revelation comes as quite a surprise. At the end of the 2021’s Mortal Kombat, Cole Young forms an alliance with Scorpion, his ancestor, to vanquish Sub-Zero and safeguard Earthrealm’s warriors for the tournament. Despite being a fresh character in the 2021 movie, I had anticipated that Cole Young would be the primary combatant representing Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat 2.

Although the character Cole Young debuted for the first time in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film and wasn’t present in any previous games, he served as the primary protagonist. The upcoming sequel promises an authentic Mortal Kombat tournament and the long-awaited arrival of Johnny Cage portrayed by Karl Urban. However, it feels odd to think that Cole Young might be less prominent this time around. Fingers crossed that he remains central, but indications about the film seem to imply that Johnny Cage could take the lead in Mortal Kombat 2.

Mortal Kombat 2’s Producer Teased Johnny Cage Is The Main Character, Not Cole Young

Johnny Cage Will Fight In The Mortal Kombat Tournament In The Sequel

Despite the fact that “Mortal Kombat 2” is set to premiere on October 24, 2025, no trailer for the movie has been made public yet, leaving many details about its plot undisclosed. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer and co-creator of the game, Ed Boon, hinted that Johnny Cage will serve as the viewer’s perspective within “Mortal Kombat 2”. This implies that Johnny Cage, a beloved character from the games, might take center stage instead of Cole Young.

The 2021 film concluded mysteriously, leaving Cole Young to pursue Johnny Cage before the impending Mortal Kombat competition. This scenario logically implies that Johnny Cage might play a significant role in Mortal Kombat 2. Moreover, Urban’s fame among the cast members could have influenced the filmmakers to expand his character’s part. Nevertheless, it remains unusual for Johnny Cage to function as the central hero instead of being one of Cole Young’s dependable comrades.

Cole Young Is Strangely Absent From Mortal Kombat 2’s Marketing So Far

Johnny Cage Has The Spotlight In Mortal Kombat 2’s Marketing Campaign

Beyond sharing Boon’s insights on Johnny Cage, it’s equally significant to mention that I haven’t spotted Cole Young in any promotional materials for Mortal Kombat 2. On the other hand, a phony movie poster showcasing Johnny Cage has been circulated to drum up excitement for the upcoming sequel. Furthermore, Urban’s portrayal of Johnny Cage is front and center among the characters in one of the initial sneak peeks for Mortal Kombat 2. Consequently, considering the promotional strategy for the movie thus far, it doesn’t appear too far-fetched to suggest that Johnny Cage could be the central figure in the sequel.

It’s highly likely that Lewis Tan’s character, Cole Young, will appear in promotional materials for Mortal Kombat 2 at some point. Given that a trailer for the movie is on its way, it’s quite surprising if Cole isn’t included. However, considering the focus of the sequel might be on more established characters from the video game series, it seems like Cole Young may have a lesser role initially to give prominence to other characters. In essence, it looks like Mortal Kombat 2 could prioritize well-known characters over introducing a new character like Cole Young.

Mortal Kombat 2 Sidelining Cole Young For Johnny Cage Would Be A Mistake

Johnny Cage Shouldn’t Be Mortal Kombat 2’s Main Character

Despite some viewers not favoring Cole Young in the initial Mortal Kombat film, it could prove detrimental to overlook him in Mortal Kombat 2. While Johnny Cage is a standout character in the Mortal Kombat universe, he’s never been the main protagonist in any of the games. It would seem odd for him to lead Earthrealm’s fighters instead of Cole Young, who has already been established as the one to take on this role.

In the initial film, Cole Young had previously vanquished Goro, a formidable warrior from Outworld, and engaged in a pivotal battle against Sub-Zero. Given that he has been established as the leading character in this revitalized series, it seems illogical if Cole Young wasn’t the one to confront Shao Kahn at the end of Mortal Kombat 2. Consequently, while Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to feature numerous captivating characters from the video game, it’s important that their inclusion doesn’t overshadow Cole Young.
