Chicago Med Finale Shocks Fans With Life-Threatening Twist and Oliver Platt’s Best Performance Yet

In the TV world of One Chicago on NBC, the tension seldom reaches such peak levels as during finale seasons, and this is undoubtedly true for Chicago Med, airing its Season 10 finale in the spring 2025 schedule. Following an episode before last that revealed a pregnancy surprise for Hannah, offered some transplant-related tension, and brought Dr. Charles together with his daughters once more, the final episode is set to feature at least one significant shock. According to showrunner Allen MacDonald, this event will highlight Oliver Platt’s acting prowess as he delivers a powerful performance.

In simple terms, the final episode of Season 10 for the show “Chicago Med” is set to broadcast on Wednesday, May 21st at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on NBC. The episode titled “…Don’t You Cry” can also be streamed the following day through a Peacock subscription. In this installment, the transplant storyline escalates further, and Goodwin finds herself in a challenging position as she needs to make tough decisions at Gaffney. Meanwhile, Anna Charles encounters a perilous situation shortly after Dr. Charles experiences a personal loss regarding his mother.

In my conversation with showrunner Allen MacDonald prior to the finale, I was privileged to pose several questions to him. Given that the show hadn’t delved into Dr. Charles’ family background for quite some time, I was curious to find out from him: why did Season 10 mark the perfect moment for this exploration? He responded by saying (to TopMob):

One of the central motifs in Season 10 is the sensation of loneliness, a feeling that seems particularly resonant with the character of Charles. Despite being an accomplished psychiatrist who’s assisted countless patients, he hasn’t always adhered to his own advice. His tendency has been to maintain emotional distance from others and prevent closeness, fearing potential heartache. In this storyline, we aimed to challenge Charles by forcing him to address the psychological issues he’s kept hidden for years.

In Chicago Med’s season 10, Oliver Platt’s character is often the go-to for psychiatric counsel among other characters. However, his personal history with therapy has been marked by complexity throughout the years. This season reintroduced a figure from the past to offer insights into his current mental state, and also set up a possible romance that appeared precarious from its very beginning.

Allen MacDonald explained that the characters of Dr. Reese (played by Rachel DiPillo) and Jackie (portrayed by Natalie Zea in La Brea) played crucial roles in his character’s growth during the current season.

We invited Dr. Sarah Reese again because she could challenge him over his harsh treatment towards her, despite him thinking it was for her own good as a psychiatrist. Similarly, we rehired Nurse Jackie Nelson because they both understand hiding pain well… They had feelings for each other but Charles eventually distances himself due to fear of happiness. In the end, by the close of the season, we chose to explore the root of his distress: his family.

Considering Dr. Charles’ situation, ending things with Jackie might have been more beneficial in the long run, even if his motivations weren’t entirely healthy. To be honest, it’s not unreasonable for fans to express concern about Dr. Charles given his past actions, such as lying under oath for Jackie.

In the emergency department at Gaffney, the doctor’s composure started to falter noticeably when he unexpectedly met his mother. This unfortunate event led to her sudden demise. Although it was a heartbreaking turn of events for the character, it offered an advantage to viewers: Mekia Cox reappeared as Robin since 2019, and Hannah Riley returned as Anna.

As hinted at in the season finale sneak peek, the arrival of his daughters will cause quite a shock. MacDonald stated:

OR

The upcoming season finale’s preview suggests that when his daughters come back, it’ll result in a major fright. MacDonald revealed:

In an attempt to avoid repeating his turbulent past with his mother, Charles maintains a distance from his daughters Robin and Anna, telling himself it’s for their sake and freedom. However, he learns that keeping his distance doesn’t prevent a negative cycle but instead may perpetuate it. This painful lesson is driven home when Anna gets seriously injured in a car accident, putting her life at risk.

Despite the challenging storyline for Dr. Charles in the last two episodes and the prospect of it not becoming any less difficult in the Season 10 finale, the showrunner heaped praise on Oliver Platt’s acting and their working relationship. The boss of Med hinted at more accolades to come.

In the final three episodes of the season, we dubbed Oliver Platt’s narrative as the “Charles Trilogy” due to our extensive exploration of his family lineage and its impact on the current events. We are both incredibly pleased with the outcome, and it’s no secret that Oliver Platt is an exceptional actor who brings a depth of emotion to these scenes that makes them so moving and real.

It’s no secret that the showrunner admires Oliver Platt greatly, as Luke Mitchell, his co-star, attests by calling him a “seasoned professional” and someone who consistently puts in effort to make each scene shine. With a career spanning back to the late ’80s and an extensive list of credits, it’s clear that Platt is a joy to work with.

It’s plausible that “The Charles Trilogy” may not have had such an impact if “Chicago Med” hadn’t managed to reinstate both Robin and Anna. This could potentially have been challenging given Mekia Cox’s regular role on ABC’s “The Rookie.” Allen MacDonald elaborated on the motivation behind bringing back both of Charles’ daughters, as well as why it was feasible for Cox to reprise her character:

It seemed appropriate to reintroduce characters Mekia and Hannah as they complemented the narrative, but also because it had been a while since we last saw them, especially Mekia who has been absent for over five years. Fortunately, The Rookie finished their season ahead of our requirements, making the timing ideal.

Will the narrative of the “Charles Trilogy” extend into Season 11, given that all three One Chicago shows have been renewed? This could potentially happen, but it’s uncertain as the resolution of Anna’s crisis in the episode “…Don’t You Cry” appears significant, hinted at by the intense preview for the season finale. Let’s keep an eye on it!

Don’t miss out! Tune to NBC on Wednesday, May 21st, 8 p.m. Eastern Time. That’s when the Season 10 finale of Chicago Med airs, a show that has left many questions unanswered in the previous episode. We hope these mysteries will be resolved before the summer break begins. As usual, Med is followed by Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET. Enjoy your weekly dose of Chicago drama!

Without much surprise, NBC plans to reinstate the popular “One Chicago” Wednesday lineup with all three shows side by side, enabling a massive crossover event in early 2025. While it’s uncertain if this will occur again next season, you can catch the three-part series on Peacock anytime.
