Tom Hanks will star in an Off-Broadway play this fall, which he also wrote. 

As a gamer, I’m excited to be part of the eight-week run at The Shed in Manhattan for the play titled “World of Tomorrow.” This captivating production revolves around the character of Bert Allenberry, a futuristic scientist, who time-travels repeatedly to find true love. Each journey brings him back to the same day – the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens. It’s like a never-ending video game quest, but instead of battling monsters, I get to explore human emotions and relationships!

The play is initially inspired by a collection of short stories penned by Hanks himself, with both Hanks and James Glossman being its authors. In this production, Hanks takes on the role of Bert Allenberry.

Exploring themes of love, longing, and the challenges we face today while holding onto memories from times past, in a setting like The Shed, seems to offer a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience reminiscent of the 1939 World’s Fair,” Hanks expressed.

Kenny Leon, who directed “Othello” and “Our Town” on Broadway last season, will oversee the upcoming production. Previews for the play start on October 30 in The Shed’s Griffin Theater, with a scheduled end date of December 21.

Leon is thrilled to team up with the exceptional Tom Hanks for their upcoming play at The Shed this fall, written by James Glossman. He’s looking forward to seeing Tom take center stage in this captivating time-traveling drama that showcases the boundless strength of love and the lengths one might go to express it. This story delves into a thought-provoking narrative about the ripples of past eras, the unexpected encounters between them, and the timeless humor it carries, which Leon can hardly wait to infuse in the Griffin Theater.

Previously, Hanks graced the stage of Broadway with his performance in “Lucky Guy” back in 2013. His outstanding portrayal in the newsroom drama earned him a nomination for a Tony Award.
