HEED THIS: Spoilers for the final episode of Hacks season 4 reveal a dramatic turn for the critically acclaimed comedy series starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. After Deborah’s unexpected resignation from her late-night show, following events in season 4, episode 9 where she stood up for Ava, Deborah grapples with finding meaning as an entertainer, hampered by a restrictive 18-month non-compete agreement in her network TV contract. Ingeniously exploiting a loophole, Deborah arranges to perform in Singapore through a translator, deceiving Ava into believing they were en route for a holiday in Hawai’i instead.

As I watched the season 4 finale unfold, I found myself ready to challenge Deborah about her escalating drinking problem and reckless escape to Singapore. true to form, Deborah brushed me off, telling me to leave as we seemed to be at odds once more, following a season filled with personal and work-related disagreements. However, everything took an unexpected turn in the final moments when I woke up to a TMZ headline declaring Deborah’s demise. Upon rushing to her hotel suite, I discovered Deborah alive but shaken by the online obituary that had been written for her. This sparked a fury within Deborah, who vehemently disliked the way the Internet would immortalize her memory once she truly passed away.

Hacks Season 4 Rushes To An Abrupt & Ambiguous Finale

Hacks Season 4 Should Have Ended With Episode 9’s Great Twist

Following the revelation that “Hacks” is coming back for a fifth season, the finale of season 4 leaves us on edge as it seems Deborah might have perished. Thankfully, it turns out to be a false alarm, providing an emotional punch for Ava who finds herself once more drawn into Deborah’s life after what appeared to be a rift between them. At this juncture, their relationship feels more like a tumultuous and harmful codependency, complete with bouts of separation anxiety and verbal confrontations – Deborah even calls Ava strange for being 29 and only having her as a friend.

In contrast to most episodes in Hacks season 4, episode 10 seems more like a conclusion or coda to episode 9. It appears to be a standalone episode that could have wrapped up the season effectively. The usual cameras, bright lights, and guest stars are absent, instead shifting the series back to its core themes by centering on the special relationship between Deborah and Ava.

In a heated moment, Deborah hints to Ava that they need to make some changes, implying the need to rework an unfavorable obituary, potentially paving the way for fresh prospects. Yet, Deborah’s intent remains somewhat enigmatic before the screen fades to black, leaving viewers intrigued about what lies ahead in Hacks season 5.

Hacks’ Season 4 Finale Overwrites The Show’s Updated Tone & Setting

Hacks Season 5 Can’t Undo The Exciting Hollywood Themes It Introduced In Season 4

I found it incredibly clever how Hacks season 4 shifted its focus towards Hollywood, enriching the series. Deborah’s character not only realized a lifelong ambition but also portrayed the first female mainstream late-night host, a role that today’s world is still waiting to see. The fourth season took on the significant task of acknowledging trailblazing women in television history, like Carol Burnett, Merrill Markoe, and Rosie O’Donnell. Furthermore, it created an atmosphere reminiscent of show business, allowing for appearances by real-life celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel and Kristen Bell.

After Deborah left her late-night show, it’s become even more uncertain where the next season of Hacks will head. Unlike the climactic end of season 3, which was packed with shock, suspense, and intense buildup, it seems that Hacks season 4 may not have a clear destination yet, implying that details for season 5 are still being developed.

It’s terrific to see Marcus and Marty back in the final episode after they were noticeably absent throughout season 4. I hope that if Deborah comes back to Vegas, these characters will become more regular again, alongside others like Kiki and DJ Vance who have been used less frequently. However, I’m hesitant about moving the show completely out of Los Angeles at a time when it was beginning to feel like an excellent substitute for another HBO comedy series, “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which concluded last year.

My aspiration for season 5 of “Hacks” is that the rewriting Deborah mentions will be done as a biopic, which Ava could collaborate on writing and Jimmy could oversee production. This would serve two purposes: it would give Jimmy an opportunity to grow as a movie producer, and it would allow Deborah to continue creating without having to perform on stage. Ideally, I’d like season 5 to have the same vibe as seasons 1-3, but without losing the progress the show made in season 4.
