Sullivan’s Crossing: The Real Love Story Fans Are Missing!

For a while now, viewers have been expressing that the main couple in Sullivan’s Crossing, Cal and Maggie, hasn’t always been the most captivating. Instead, it seems like the most compelling romantic duo on the series has been obvious from the start. The relationships depicted in Sullivan’s Crossing don’t often appear stable – if they were, there wouldn’t be much storyline to explore. Maggie and Cal faced challenges for two seasons, with her indecision between Andrew and Cal, as well as her difficulty in expressing herself, delaying their reconciliation. However, it wasn’t until the end of the last season that Maggie decided to confront her issues head-on within Sullivan’s Crossing.

Similarly, Sydney and Rafe found themselves entangled in a prolonged dance of romantic ambiguity for nearly two seasons. Walter deceived Phoebe by concealing his deceitful actions. The chemistry between Andrew and Maggie was questionable from the very start. Romantic pairings other than theirs have received limited screen time, such as Rob’s one-night stand with Jane or Jackson’s short-lived summer romance with Kaleb during season 1.

Edna & Frank Have Always Been Sullivan’s Crossing’s Strongest Couple

They’re Stable In A Sea Of Drama

In Sullivan’s Crossing, it’s the Cranebear couple, Frank and Edna, who stand out as the most solid pair. Although Maggie is the main character, the Cranebears are the emotional core of the story, not just for the show but also for the fictional camp. Their unwavering presence in the series, amidst the continuous turmoil, is like a rock. Whether it’s dealing with real estate disputes or personal matters, they remain steady. In a series filled with drama, their strong relationship serves as a much-needed anchor to counteract the melodrama.

The Cranebears’ Romance Is More Interesting & Has More Chemistry Than The Others

It’s Not Volatile New Love, But Deep, Old Love

To be frank about it, I often find myself being truthful, and in this case, I must confess that Maggie and Cal don’t seem to have a strong connection for me. Maggie, due to her numerous emotional barriers and misplaced priorities during the initial seasons, hasn’t given viewers much to cheer for. She appears quite one-dimensional with little personality. Sydney and Rafe share similar issues; their relationship has been mostly unexplored until now, and they’ve found themselves in troubled waters already this season. As a result, there aren’t any romantic pairings that truly pull us in emotionally.

However, Edna and Frank have a unique tale. Their love story stands out as the most captivating and complex, not due to a recent romance, but because it’s an enduring, profound one. They’ve each gone through their own relationship journeys, filled with hurdles such as Frank prioritizing Sully over Edna, Frank reconciling with his past and mending fences with family members, and this season, Edna grappling with the realization of her approaching menopause and contemplating her own mortality.

The difficulties in their relationship are authentic and familiar, not contrived just to prolong tension or stem from immature, uncertain individuals. Instead, these hardships only serve to amplify their moments of joy; since their introduction, the deep love between Edna and Frank has been palpable. They express their affection freely, something other characters often fail to do, and this warmth feels sincere. Both Andrea Menard and Tom Jackson deserve praise for portraying these characters so convincingly.

The Perfect Sullivan’s Crossing Spinoff Would Be An Edna & Frank Cranebear Prequel

Their Backstory Makes The Perfect Main Story

If Sullivan’s Crossing were to spawn a spinoff someday, I have an intriguing concept: a series centered around the youth of Edna and Frank Cranebear. Within Sullivan’s Crossing, their backstory has subtly been suggested, with both characters expressing their struggles in finding a sense of home and belonging over time. They’ve also discussed how their unique Indigenous heritages and cultures have influenced them, sometimes in challenging ways. While we know about Frank’s estrangement from his family, Edna’s past has hinted at being equally difficult.

Exploring a prequel series about the Cranebears could offer rich opportunities, should another season of “Sullivan’s Crossing” not materialize. The pairing of two lost individuals discovering one another makes for a compelling romantic drama, further enhanced by thoughtfully weaving Indigenous narratives and motifs into their personal journey and love story. Watching characters heal and support each other through their shared love is an excellent foundation for a heartwarming tale. Personally, I would be thrilled to witness more of the “Sullivan’s Crossing” couple, regardless of how it unfolds.
