The movie “Homebound,” featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa, was recently shown at the esteemed 78th Cannes Film Festival. However, despite Neeraj Ghaywan’s film achieving a significant milestone, it’s back in the news, but unfortunately for the wrong reasons. In fact, independent filmmaker Abhinav Singh has accused the cinematographer of “Homebound,” Pratik Shah, of being emotionally abusive and manipulative.
What is the controversy between Abhinav Singh and Pratik Shah?
Lately, independent filmmaker Abhinav Singh has been vocal on Instagram, accusing a predator in the movie industry. He underscored that often, women choose not to confront such individuals because of long-held traditions, cultural norms, and deep-rooted teachings that encourage them to remain silent, secure, and enduring.
He shared that his confession prompted around 20 additional women to contact him, as they too had faced distressing situations like his. Moreover, the filmmaker voiced his dismay about certain ‘aware’ males choosing not to speak up regarding this awkward behavior.
He pointed out that women often face consequences for expressing their opinions and encouraged men to leverage their advantages by actively listening, posing tough queries, and taking action to challenge unacceptable conduct, even if it means being uncomfortable.
He emphasized that it’s not just women like your mothers, daughters, and sisters who deserve respect; it’s also friends, colleagues, and peers. Being a man isn’t about physical abilities; it’s about taking action. In another post on social media, he stressed the importance of standing up to issues rather than becoming part of them.

Initially, I withheld the name, but eventually, I unveiled it as no one else but Pratik Shah.
Initially, I kept the artist’s identity a secret, but in time, I disclosed that it was none other than Pratik Shah.
The number of women contacting me is truly alarming, making me feel as if I’m experiencing a situation similar to Margot Robbie’s character in Bombshell. I stand firm in my decision not to be silenced. To those who continue to support him, shame on you. His name is Pratik Shah, and he is a cinematographer.

When internet users paid attention to the allegations, it appears that Pratik Shah subsequently deactivated his Instagram account. At present, an error message “user not found” is shown on his profile, suggesting that either the account was removed or temporarily disabled.
Industry people come in support of Abhinav Singh
However, the dispute appears to have gained significant traction, since numerous other filmmakers voiced their support for Abhinav Singh’s accusations.
Filmmaker and author Srishti Riya Jain posted conversations from Reddit that showed people on the internet had earlier pointed out Shah’s actions, labeling him as a person who often sent unsolicited messages to women on social media platforms and made them feel uneasy.
Srishti openly showed her intense response, saying to those feigning surprise, “Even though they claim to be shocked, scandalized, and just waking up, this individual who contributed to one of the ‘most empathetic’ films of the year, as suggested by their interviews at Cannes. Has been behaving inappropriately for the past four years.
She mentioned that the specified post is among the most frequently searched items on Google. However, she cautioned that the industry tends to have a narrow focus and quick interest when individuals receive recognition.
Beyond that, Smriti Kiran, head of Pola Dot Slight Box, not only backed the claims but also expressed her anticipation for the situation to progress. Furthermore, she acknowledged receiving numerous messages from various women who all guessed the same name.
