In the 2010s, I found myself deeply drawn to the captivating character of Mike Ross, portrayed by Patrick J. Adams, in the series Suits. Even though it ended in 2019, Mike’s story remains one of the most iconic for me. If you’re yearning for a similar experience, I’d recommend giving ABC’s latest hit show a try.
Hailing from the golden age of network television, Suits was all about a team of sharp and stylish lawyers navigating intense dramas with an effortless charm and biting humor. After bidding farewell to Suits, its creator, Aaron Korsh, started brainstorming a new show in California, which eventually became Suits LA. However, this West Coast spinoff faced challenges from the get-go.
Instead of Gabriel Macht’s character Harvey Specter, Stephen Amell played Ted Black in the cast of Suits LA. Alongside Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, Ted co-managed a law firm that focused on entertainment and criminal law. However, their business partnership was shaken when Stuart ousted Ted from their merger deal in the series premiere. Following this betrayal, Ted rebuilt his firm and often faced off against Stuart. Despite reconciling later, their relationship lacked the intensity of Harvey and Mike, or even Harvey and Louis (played by Rick Hoffman).
Suits LA Fails To Replicate Suits’ Success & Bring Back Mike Ross
The West-Coast Spinoff Was A One-Season Wonder
Unfortunately, the spin-off series of Suits, titled Suits LA, didn’t manage to capture the essence that made the original series a hit – its charm and character depth. From underdeveloped characters to unengaging conflicts, Suits LA struggled to establish a strong base and ultimately faced challenges in maintaining viewer interest. It was only a matter of time before the show was canceled, as its poor ratings and critical backlash made it clear that NBC needed to make a decision. The first episode of Suits LA was met with widespread criticism, a reputation it could not shake off, making it difficult for the spinoff to recover.
The return of cherished original characters wasn’t enough to keep Suits LA from being canceled. Harvey made a brief appearance as Ted’s former friend and colleague, Louis and Stuart formed a bond at an anger management retreat, and even Daniel Hardman (David Costabile) came back in a flashback court case. Having Gabriel Macht and Rick Hoffman reprise their iconic roles was enjoyable, but it felt painful to see two of the original series’ key characters struggling. However, omitting Mike Ross (or an LA equivalent) was arguably the most glaring oversight that might have doomed Suits LA‘s second season.
Why Mike Ross Is Such An Integral Part Of Suits’ Success
In The Early Days, He Was Arguably More Important Than Harvey
In the series Suits LA, Ted Black wasn’t required to fill the role of a new Harvey Specter— instead, it was Mike Ross who significantly shaped the early success and identity of Suits. As the spark that ignited the central conflict and the foundation of the storyline, Mike Ross played a crucial role in defining Suits. With his photographic memory, intricate character, and witty banter with Harvey, Mike’s unlicensed legal practice helped establish Suits as one of the greatest legal dramas ever made. While Harvey is known for his polished demeanor and self-assured attitude, it was Mike’s sharp wit and sarcasm that truly set Suits apart.
Instead of Suits LA, the spinoff lacked an immediate captivating element such as Mike’s secret identity as a law prodigy. While Ted’s troubled history in New York was delved into deeply through intense flashbacks, it lacked the suspense and curiosity found in the original series. At times, it seemed like the spinoff tried to mimic the original characters (making Ted similar to Harvey, Stuart like Louis), but none could match Mike’s unique charm. Even after departing early from the series, Mike remains highly admired among Suits fans due to his endearing portrayal as the unwilling genius.
High Potential Features A Lead That Is Similar To Mike Ross
Both Are Quirky Geniuses Who Have To Prove Themselves
In contrast to Ted Black’s and Suits LA’s shortcomings, ABC’s High Potential thrives spectacularly. Kaitlin Olson stars as Morgan Gillory, leading this investigative series about a mother of three who is identified as a High Potential Intellectual. Similar to Mike Ross, Morgan possesses an unparalleled memory, a quick wit, and a distinct personality. Instead of teaming up with Harvey Specter, she collaborates with the LAPD and Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata). By tackling crime head-on through resolving intricate murder cases in High Potential, Morgan brings a fresh perspective that frequently completes the puzzle. Just as Mike, Morgan offers an innovative viewpoint that often serves as the crucial piece of the puzzle.
As a film enthusiast, I’d rephrase that as follows: Beyond the surface, both Morgan and Mike find themselves battling against people’s preconceived notions about them. Prior to the series, Morgan was just a cleaner for the LAPD, often dismissed by many, even being called “the cleaning lady” after solving numerous cases. Interestingly, it’s their shared underestimation of their intellectual abilities that truly bonds Mike and Morgan. In essence, they are both individuals who, despite their genius, have struggled to meet others’ expectations but nonetheless found themselves indispensable team members.
What To Expect From Morgan In High Potential Season 2
Morgan Has Plenty Of Mystery Left
It’s great news that Morgan is stepping into the shoes previously filled by Mike Ross and Suits, yet managing to preserve her distinctive character. Moreover, unlike Suits LA’s unfortunate demise, High Potential has already been granted a second season extension by ABC, thanks to the positive reception towards its pilot episode. Unlike being a clone or inferior version of Mike Ross, Morgan possesses her own drives, imperfections, and interpersonal connections that make her stand out. Additionally, as shown in the finale of High Potential, Morgan’s personal struggles and professional growth remain ongoing.
The mysterious kidnapper, referred to as David (David Giuntoli), remains free after his criminal activities during the finale of season 1 of “High Potential,” and he made it clear that Morgan would cross paths with him again. The details of David’s intentions for season 2 of “High Potential” are yet unknown, but they could put at risk everyone dear to Morgan. Furthermore, a significant development in the unsolved case of Morgan’s ex-husband Roman’s disappearance might drastically alter her life. Discovering the truth about Roman in “High Potential” promises excitement, but Morgan must confront the unexpected consequences of her search for answers.
In a wider perspective, Morgan’s potential gradual romance with her partner might appeal to fans who enjoy office romances, much like Mike Ross and Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle). The family dynamics of Morgan, Ava (Amirah J), Elliot (Matthew Lamb), baby Chloe, and co-parent Ludo (Taran Killam) provide touching moments on a more intimate level. Certainly, the crime-solving aspects of High Potential are thrilling. However, just as the seductive atmosphere of Suits and Mike Ross, the compelling character of Morgan is what truly draws viewers in.
