2008 saw my introduction to the world of filmmaking through Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy thriller “In Bruges,” a piece that garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. As a follower, I found myself in the shoes of actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, portraying Irish hitmen seeking refuge in the picturesque town of Bruges, Belgium. Ralph Fiennes graced the screen as our stern boss. Beyond its Oscar recognition, “In Bruges” was hailed as “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a 84% approval rating from critics.
Lately, Farrell played the lead role as “The Penguin” (Oswald “Oz” Cobb) in HBO’s series, which earned him a Golden Globe award in 2025. It is worth noting that Farrell reprised his portrayal of The Penguin from the 2022 movie, The Batman, joining an extensive list of actors who have played this villainous character. One notable actor among them is Danny DeVito, who also played The Penguin in previous productions. Recently, both Farrell and DeVito participated in a new interview together, where the topics of their collaborative work on “In Bruges” and “The Penguin” were discussed by DeVito himself.
Farrell: “It Was Depressing”
Devito suggested combining elements of “In Bruges” and a touch of “The Penguin” to appreciate the stark contrast between them, as he advised Farrell.
Later on, Farrell mentioned that making the 2008 film wasn’t a walk in the park for him since he had just recently quit drinking. “In Bruges,” he shared, “was fantastic with over 460 types of beer available, but I was around 14 months sober at the time.” He confessed it was disheartening as he said, “I wished I had arrived a year and half earlier.” All I could do was buy chocolates and linens,” he admitted.

The Future of The Penguin
It was initially believed that “The Penguin” would only run for one season, but more recently, showrunner and executive producer Lauren LeFranc hinted at the possibility of another season for the popular series. LeFranc stated that additional seasons depend on whether they can create a story that surpasses what they’ve already presented, and she is currently examining potential plotlines if there will indeed be more episodes.
Sgt. Rock Movie Scrapped
This year, it became known that Farrell was being considered for the lead role in Sgt. Rock, a World War II action film then in development at DC Studios. At that point, Justin Kuritzkes had written the script and James Gunn and Peter Safran were set to direct the movie, which they had initially hinted about in February 2025.
In April, it was announced that the film titled Sgt. Rock, which was nearly ready to move into production, was abruptly halted by DC. The movie was in the process of finalizing the cast for the remaining members of Sgt. Rock’s Easy Company and a female French fighter, but unfortunately, the project had to be put on hold.
The comic book hero known as Sgt. Rock was brought to life by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. He’s a World War II soldier who boasts extraordinary physical prowess and is exceptionally adept with weapons and close-quarters combat. This character has roots dating back to 1959 when he first appeared in print. In the past, efforts have been made to bring him to life on the big screen, with Bruce Willis considered for the main role. However, these film projects never materialized.
The Penguin is streaming on HBO Max. In Bruges is available to rent on Digital platforms.
