Despite some controversy, it’s confirmed that the Belfast rap group Kneecap is set to perform at the 2025 Glastonbury Music Festival in the United Kingdom, as per the announcement made on Tuesday.
Despite facing pressure to cancel due to one of its members being accused of a terrorist offense, the Kneecap band will still appear on the West Holts Stage on June 28th, as initially scheduled at Glastonbury. This decision comes after an incident that took place on November 21st in a venue in north London.
The collective, consisting of Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh among others, has faced broad condemnation and the scrutiny of London’s Metropolitan Police following videos circulating online that appear to depict them advocating for the demise of British government ministers. Additionally, there are recordings of them cheering “long live Hamas, long live Hezbollah.”
A group made up of Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh has been under fire and is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police due to internet videos suggesting they urged the death of British parliament officials, along with shouting slogans like “for Hamas, for Hezbollah.”
Or in a more conversational tone:
This group that includes Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh has been causing a stir and catching the attention of the Metropolitan Police because of some online videos. It seems they’re calling for the demise of British government ministers and shouting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah.
In the U.K., it’s against the law to back Hezbollah because it is recognized as a terrorist group. Recently, during their performance at Coachella, Kneecap presented political statements about the ongoing conflict in Gaza. As a result, several of Kneecap’s concerts in Germany were subsequently cancelled.
In response to the criticisms leveled against them, the patellas (a metaphor for themselves) expressed their apologies to the families of the slain Parliament members and asserted that they’ve been subjected to “deliberate misrepresentations and fabrications.” Moreover, they made it clear that they have never offered any form of backing or support to Hamas or Hezbollah.
Although Kneecap remains on Glastonbury’s lineup, they were removed from Scotland’s TRNSMT festival for a July 11 performance due to safety concerns raised by the police. The rap group themselves announced, “Due to safety concerns at the event, Kneecap can no longer perform at TRNSMT.
1) The kneecap team unveiled a new concert date at Glasgow’s O2 Academy for July 8th, which is now fully booked. Meanwhile, the Glastonbury festival, scheduled from June 25th to the 29th at Worthy Farm, Somerset, continues to receive widespread coverage on BBC radio and television networks.
