Ghosts Season 5 Must Fix Sass and Joan’s Underdeveloped Romance

In the fourth season of Sass and Joan’s “Ghosts,” their love story was adorable, but the conclusion felt off-mark, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating updates on their relationship status in season 5. Despite the ghost characters in CBS’s “Ghosts” being the show’s main stars, it doesn’t imply that each ghost receives an equal share of screen time and narrative emphasis. Characters like Judy Farnsby, Stephanie, or Chris typically make appearances in just one or two episodes, and even frequently featured guest stars such as Nigel and Nancy are occasionally sidelined for multiple episodes.

Given the extensive cast of characters in the sitcom, it’s not surprising that some guest stars in Ghosts, both main and recurring humans, get a bit overshadowed. Unlike its British counterpart, the CBS version of Ghosts has been expanding its ghostly ensemble with each season, leading to instances where certain guest stars in season 4 were given less screentime than they warranted. However, one instance in particular stood out as particularly unfair.

Sass and Joan’s Ghosts Season 4 Romance Ended Abruptly

The Couple’s Time Together Ended With Sass Announcing He Lost His Virginity

In my opinion as a movie reviewer, the romantic journey between Sass and Joan in Ghosts season 4 was truly captivating, offering a heartwarming twist to an otherwise spooky tale. However, I must admit that the season finale left me slightly disappointed. The emotional depth and tension built up throughout their relationship seemed to dissipate, leaving a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion that diluted the intensity of the preceding episodes.

After several instalments filled with Sass’ internal struggles between pursuing his childhood crush Shiki or chasing after Hollywood screenwriter Joan, it was heartening to see him finally acknowledge his feelings for Joan. Their romantic connection culminated in a moment that brought closure to the long-standing jokes about Sass’ centuries of virginity.

Despite its flaws, I still found Ghosts season 4 to be an engaging watch, thanks in large part to the intriguing development between Sass and Joan. The disappointing ending, however, left me hoping for a more satisfying resolution in future seasons.

Ghosts Actor Character Name
Brandon Scott Jones Isaac Higgintoot
Roman Zaragoza Sass
Danielle Pinnock Alberta
Rebecca Wisocky Hetty
Richie Moriarty Pete
Asher Grodman Trevor
Devon Chandler Long Thor

Although Sass’s performance in Ghost’s season 4 was generally impressive, I found the resolution of their subplot to be unsatisfying. After all the build-up involving Joan and Sass’s flirtatious exchanges and the substantial time dedicated to developing the charming character of Joan, it felt awkward that the storyline concluded immediately after they had sex, particularly since Sass seemed to revel in this accomplishment while there was no indication of where Joan might have been afterward.

In light of Sass’ historical sensitivity, it was somewhat unexpected and disconcerting that he chose to broadcast his romantic victories instead of spending more quality time with Joan. In fact, by the following episode, Joan’s departure was brushed aside when Sass casually mentioned she was away for a while. While saving Jay’s soul from Elias is likely to be the main focus in season 5 of Ghosts, it would be intriguing to see the series give Taylor Ortega’s fresh character more substantial development than just a fleeting romance with Sass.

Sass and Joan’s Ghosts Season 4 Relationship Deserved Better

The Couple’s Courtship Was About More Than Just Sex

Despite yearning deeply to lose his virginity, the fact that this unromantic ending felt unusually odd was largely due to the fact that Sass and Joan’s relationship transcended sexual boundaries. These two shared an extraordinary connection, and it was Joan who helped Sass move on from Shiki, not merely because he had feelings for her, but because she played a significant role in making him realize that his priorities had shifted significantly over the centuries since his demise, and he had transformed into a different person altogether.

It’s quite noticeable that while character Patience in Ghosts season 4 received significant screen time despite not joining the main cast permanently, Sass and Joan’s potential as a couple seems to have overshadowed Joan’s potential contribution to the Woodstone mansion rather quickly, following their encounter.

Ghosts Season 5 Must Bring Back Joan and Sass’s Story

The Couple Deserves More Focus In Ghosts Season 5

It would be beneficial for season 5 of Ghosts to expand their focus on the relationship between Sass and Joan, as this dynamic duo may encounter various first-time experiences in a romantic partnership given Sass’s limited experience with such relationships. Since Sass is accustomed to wandering and Joan often stays at the Woodstone Mansion, they could have frequent opportunities to spend time together. However, much like Pete, Joan might find her roaming days eventually restricted by time, leading to temporary separations.

In this series, there’s a lot of tension and excitement due to potential conflicts, yet Sass and Joan are witty, grown-up, and relaxed compared to many other ghostly figures. This makes their dynamic engaging as they figure out how to manage their own relationships, given that they’ve usually been in secondary roles. One of the most irritating aspects of the show Ghosts is its overuse of cliffhanger finishes. However, if the show devoted more time to developing characters like Joan and Sass, these endings might not be as frequent.

One Ghosts Season 4 Story Doesn’t Bode Well For Sass and Joan

Pete’s Off-Location Relationship Didn’t Last

In simpler terms, Sass and Joan have an intense romantic dynamic, especially since Sass resides in Woodstone Mansion and Joan can’t permanently stay there. This situation calls for a larger shared focus on these characters in season 5. If not, the upcoming season might repeat the mistake seen in Ghosts, where Pete and Donna’s relationship had potential but eventually lost steam due to her extended absence from the show. Sadly, their storyline didn’t reach its full potential, which is something Sass and Joan should work hard to prevent.

In the third season, when Pete encountered Donna, it appeared he felt as captivated by this new cast member as Sass does towards Joan. In fact, Isaac postponed his marriage to Nigel in pursuit of a relationship like Pete and Donna’s. Regrettably, the fourth season of Ghosts largely overlooked the storyline involving Pete and Donna. Initially, the sitcom suggested that Donna might be a serial killer and Pete vanished without a trace for weeks on end, with no mention of him between episodes 4 and 19.

Following 15 episodes, Pete unraveled the murder mystery surrounding Donna’s husband, understanding her innocence, and subsequently broke up with her to pursue Alberta. While the finale of ‘Ghosts’ season 4 had its moments, this plot twist was especially disheartening. Donna was just starting to develop as a character when the sitcom sidelined her, and if Sass follows suit in season 5, Joan might face a similar fate. Consequently, Ghosts season 5 should focus more on the relationship between Joan and Sass instead of replicating the Pete/Donna error from season 4.
