Acclaimed fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson, known for his works like ‘Mistborn’ and ‘The Stormlight Archive’, has shared his thoughts about the controversy surrounding the cancellation of ‘The Wheel of Time’ at Amazon. Interestingly, Sanderson also took over the writing of ‘The Wheel of Time’ series after Robert Jordan’s demise in 2007. Recently, as a consulting producer for the Amazon TV adaptation, he has now spoken up about the decision to end ‘The Wheel of Time’ show.
In the comments beneath a recent video on Sanderson’s YouTube channel, the author mentioned that he didn’t have a significant role in the production of the show. Previously, his criticism of the series was well-known. He suggested that his involvement extended only as far as the studio wanting to associate his name with it, stating, “I won’t miss being overlooked.” However, on a brighter note, he expressed remorse over the cancellation of the show after its best season, a sentiment shared by many fans. You can read his full statement here:
I wasn’t deeply involved, only aware of what was made public. They mentioned that they were renegotiating, and I assumed everything would be fine. Then, I didn’t hear anything for two months. After that, I found out about the news just like everyone else.
Still, it’s disappointing as, despite my issues with the show, it had a loyal fanbase who deserved better than a sudden cancellation after its best season. I won’t miss feeling largely disregarded; they used my name for credibility but didn’t want me to contribute significantly.
What Brandon Sanderson’s Comments Mean
Brandon Sanderson Understands Both Ends Of The Wheel Of Time Debate
Ever since the news broke about The Wheel of Time‘s cancellation, fans of both the books and the series have been divided on whether this turn of events is good or bad. Given that the show had its flaws from the get-go, it’s no surprise that it sparked such a wide array of reactions among viewers. Some found it to be a compelling adaptation of Robert Jordan’s writings, while others felt it dishonored the legacy of the beloved late author.
Brandon Sanderson, ever diplomatic in his words, acknowledges he faced issues with the show. It’s quite possible that being seldom consulted during the production process is a reflection of what book enthusiasts view as the main problems in the adaptation. However, it’s worth noting that Sanderson is also understanding towards those who were deeply invested in the series, as evidenced by the 136,000-strong petition.
The third season of ‘The Wheel of Time’, however, saw significant improvements, as indicated by both critics and audiences. It’s unfortunate that there won’t be a fourth season for fans to enjoy.
Our Take On Brandon Sanderson’s Comments
This Is Exactly Why Sanderson Doesn’t Want His Work Adapted Right Now
In recent times, there have been varying reports on adaptations for “Mistborn” and “The Stormlight Archive,” but author Brandon Sanderson has been cautious when it comes to choosing a studio for his projects. He famously stated, “Hollywood doesn’t know what to do with people who don’t need their money” (Arcanum), expressing his influential status and the unique situation of an author being able to reject Hollywood offers. He often discusses the challenges the film industry faces when dealing with epic fantasy, and “The Wheel of Time” serves as a prime example of why he’s not in a hurry to produce shows.
