As a die-hard gamer, I can’t help but wonder if the upcoming game might be home to not one, but two colossal cities and an enhanced RPG system. But what about its multiplayer aspect? CD Projekt Red has kept mum on any online features for the sequel so far, yet doesn’t it ring a bell that the original Cyberpunk 2077 initially planned to include a multiplayer mode, which unfortunately didn’t make the final cut?
How Watch Dogs’ Multiplayer Could Inform the Sequel
Although we’re not entirely sure about the specific workings of Cyberpunk 2077’s initial multiplayer component, it’s evident that CD Projekt Red could benefit significantly by studying Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs series for insights on its multiplayer design.
The multiplayer aspect of Watch Dogs was effortlessly integrated within its open environment, allowing players to be followed, invited for races, hacked, or playfully bothered in a spontaneous and unforeseeable manner. This type of natural online interaction could harmoniously blend with the setting of Cyberpunk, particularly when combined with the disorderly, technology-centric sandbox of Night City (and the recently speculated additional city).

Having a smooth online feature could prove beneficial as well as challenging. On one hand, it offers fresh opportunities for immersion and interaction; on the other, it can lead to common problems such as harassment, disruption, and imbalance. To tackle these issues, CD Projekt Red might want to employ protective measures similar to those used by FromSoftware in their multiplayer invasion system.
