For three full seasons, Sheriff Mike Thompson, played by Corey Reynolds in Resident Alien, has persistently maintained a skeptical stance about aliens and UFOs, often butting heads with his forward-thinking deputy, Liv Baker (Elizabeth Bowen), who holds more open beliefs.
In Season 4’s premiere, despite having physically fought an actual alien Grey in the Season 3 finale, Mike persistently expressed his doubts about life beyond our planet at the start of Season 4. However, a surprising revelation from the cave-dwelling cyborg character, Peter Bach (played by Terry O’Quinn), during last week’s episode served as a clear wake-up call for him. With the evidence becoming increasingly hard to dismiss, Mike admitted his error in tonight’s episode, “Ties That Bind,” acknowledging that Liv was correct all along. According to Reynolds, it’s a significant stride for Mike when he acknowledges his mistake. Sharing life experiences can foster connection, empathy, and sympathy, and it seems this has deepened their relationship now that he understands her experience better. Moreover, he expresses feeling remorseful about the situation.

He went on to say: “Mike dislikes making mistakes. Everything he does seems aimed at avoiding errors, as he strives to be correct all the time. I believe his need to be right stems from previous successes, but this time, he erred. It’s much like trying to join two magnets with the same poles; it’s difficult for him to acknowledge his mistake. However, he values Deputy Liv and their relationship is significant to him. I feel that he regrets being wrong for so long.

Meanwhile, Bowen is thrilled that the two characters have finally reached an agreement regarding the issue, as Liv has endured gaslighting from her supervisor for three consecutive seasons.
She clarified, “I understand his perspective on my belief in the existence of aliens. However, what’s wonderful is that they’ve always been a united front, even when their relationship wasn’t perfectly balanced or free from issues. Now, they’re equals who share the same viewpoint, and it’s really enjoyable.
