As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I’d be thrilled to step up and lead the Writers Guild of America West if given the chance. For now, it seems like I’m the only one in the running, but who knows what twists and turns the future may hold! Meredith Stiehm has been a fantastic leader for close to four years, and I can only hope to follow in her footsteps.
On Monday, the union unveiled the news along with the names of other preliminary contenders vying for officer and board roles during its 2025 elections. Notably, this election will decide the individuals who will steer the WGA West throughout their upcoming contract talks with major movie and television studios in 2026 – a negotiation that will mark the union’s first since the 148-day strike in 2023.

The union made the announcement, revealing the names of other potential candidates seeking officer and board roles for the 2025 elections, on Monday. Importantly, this election will choose the leaders who will navigate the WGA West during their upcoming contract discussions with major film and television studios in 2026 – a negotiation that will be the union’s first since the 148-day strike in 2023.
Even though Mulroney currently lacks a competitor, this scenario might alter. Union members still possess the opportunity to enter the fray, vying for both officer and board positions by gathering a minimum required number of member signatures on a petition. The deadline for submitting these petitions is set for July 23rd.
As a gamer, I’ve learned that in this race, there are two contenders vying for the vice presidency – Jeffrey Thompson and Travis Donnelly. Meanwhile, the positions for Secretary-Treasurer have Peter Murrieta and Van Robichaux up against each other.
eighteen individuals are competing for eight available positions on the union’s board of directors. Rob Forman, Maggie Levin, Adam Conover, Dante Harper, and Molly Nussbaum are seeking re-election, while Evan Mirzai, Matt Ross, Marguerite MacIntyre, Myles Warden, Mike Royce, Gia King, Jill Goldsmith, Elliott Kalan, Dahéli Hall, Christina Walker, Cathryn Humphris, and Kevin L. Miller are newcomers in the race.

As your new representative, I’m stepping into a challenging scenario – our union is in a state of flux. Last season (2023-2024), there was a significant drop of around 42% in TV writing jobs compared to the year before, according to a recent internal report. We don’t have the numbers for the current season (2025-2025) yet, but it seems we’re still navigating a tight-budget, contracting landscape. As gamers, we understand the need to adapt and overcome obstacles in order to create the best content possible.
More recently, the workers’ union has faced contentious disputes regarding strike-related disciplinary actions, as members just barely approved three out of four penalties imposed by the council during a recent ballot.
Additionally, the union itself has been part of an internal unionization effort, as employees have come forward with a mobilization plan – along with accusations of anti-union activities – in April. Subsequently, the union was granted voluntary recognition during the same month, which means that management and staff are expected to start discussing their first contract within the next year.
