Mick Ralphs, Founding Guitarist of Bad Company and Mott The Hoople, Dies at 81

It’s with sad news that we report the passing of Mick Ralphs, the original guitarist-composer for Bad Company and Mott The Hoople. The band confirmed this on their official Instagram account yesterday. Mick was 81 years old.

With deep regret, we share the heartbreaking news that our cherished member, Mick Ralphs, has passed away,” the band expressed, followed by separate tributes from Bandmates Simon Kirke and Paul Rodgers.

Ralphs is survived by partner, Susie Chavasse, his two children and three step-children.

Mick has sadly left us, causing my heart to sink. He leaves behind an abundance of remarkable songs and cherished moments. To me, he was a friend, a creative collaborator, an exceptionally talented and versatile guitarist with an infectious sense of humor. Our recent chat just a few days ago was filled with laughter, but it won’t be our last. There are countless memories of Mick that will continue to bring smiles. My deepest sympathies go out to everyone who adored him, especially his beloved Susie. I look forward to reuniting with him in the hereafter.

Kirke remarked, “He was not just a friend, but a cherished one. He possessed an extraordinary talent for songwriting and playing the guitar. His absence will be felt profoundly.

Ralph composed several popular tunes, including “Can’t Get Enough” by Bad Company, “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad,” and “Ready For Love.” He also played the memorable opening guitar riff on Mott’s hit song “All The Young Dudes,” a renowned composition penned by David Bowie. This year, Ralph will be honored posthumously at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony along with Bad Company.

Born in 1944, Ralph established The Doc Thomas Group in 1966. Later on, the band underwent a name change from Silence to Mott The Hoople in 1969 following Ian Hunter’s arrival. In their initial years, they faced challenges in commercial success but garnered respect among musicians such as Bowie, who generously presented them with “All The Young Dudes,” which eventually became their most renowned track.

Following Mott the Hoople’s disbandment, Ralph teamed up with Rodgers, Kirke, and Boz Burrell to form the supergroup Bad Company. They were the initial act signed to Led Zeppelin’s record label, Swan Song Records. Ralph performed his last show with Bad Company at London’s O2 Arena in 2016, but had to stop due to a stroke that hospitalized him just a few days later.

On Monday, Bad Company expressed that Mick Ralphs’ musical legacy is a powerful influence that will continue to inspire future generations.
