I started playing before the 1.0 update, and my initial spawn was tranquil with minimal Puppets lurking around. Plenty of houses brimmed with lootable resources, but don’t let that deceive you – things can change rapidly in this game, so always stay alert. If you’re new to the game and seeking some guidance, then welcome! You’ve landed in the right spot.
Start In Sandbox Mode/PvE Servers
To get started, I advise you to try out the practice or beginner-focused settings initially, perhaps a Player vs. Environment (PvE) environment. In this mode, you’ll be playing solo (single-player), which allows you to progress at your own speed. Stats Matter
In SCUM, you’ll rely a lot on your stats.
For your initial character creation, it’s natural to worry about the statistics you’re assigning and that’s perfectly fine. However, avoid using identical numbers such as 3, 3, 3, 3 for your stat allocations. While it might seem like a balanced approach, some statistics increase at a faster rate during gameplay. Instead, experienced players recommend starting with a distribution like 5, 1, 1, 5 as a good foundation. This will provide a more effective balance from the start of your gaming experience.
If you’re considering diving into PvE or sandbox gaming, Stealth could be quite beneficial to dodge frequent detection from Puppets. In games like SCUM and Project Zomboid, I often prioritize Medical stats since they can be tough to upgrade.
Walk, Don’t Run
As a gamer, I found myself itching to explore the vast expanse of the map, but I quickly realized that speeding through it would only lead to trouble. The scroll wheel on my mouse allowed me to adjust my pace as needed, but I learned the hard way that rushing attracts those pesky Puppets. To make matters worse, I spawned in an area swarming with a mechanical menace – a mech! Needless to say, I met an untimely end. To survive the early days of this game, it’s essential to tread carefully and always stay vigilant.
Craft The Basics
If you’re descending or landing from above, seek out rocks nearby immediately. They’re often found on the ground and are scattered around. This is crucial because having a stone knife will be beneficial. Instead of wasting time searching for knives within houses, it would be better to have a stone knife handy.
Following this, use a stone-edged tool to trim a bush, yielding useful branches. With these branches, you can fashion a spear, which can be utilized in single combat against the Puppets. Gather additional resources to enhance your weaponry and tools, for example, an axe and a bow.
It’s important to also have a bag along with your colorful attire. Without it, you’ll find it challenging to transport multiple items. In a hot climate, you could even use your garments to make an impromptu sack if necessary.
Looting is Key
After you’ve gathered some decent initial equipment, it’s now time for you to advance by settling into houses and collecting improved items like superior outfits and weapons. Don’t forget that you can adjust the position of your gear for a more efficient fit, but do this in a secure location. Occasionally, you might encounter knives which come in handy for dealing with Puppets one at a time as well. If you find yourself having trouble locating animals, then your best solution would be to focus on finding mushrooms and olives instead.
Death Isn’t The End
It’s unfortunate that you met your end in the game SCUM, but it doesn’t signify that your gaming days are over. Instead, view each death as an opportunity to learn and improve. Reflect on whether you were being too conspicuous, venturing into potentially risky zones like those inhabited by Puppets, mechs, or armed NPCs, or heavily populated areas teeming with Puppets or other players. This way, you can adjust your strategies and continue your adventure in SCUM more wisely.
