The Only Mister Terrific Explainer You Need Before Superman

In 2025, James Gunn’s DC Universe reboot will introduce a new set of characters in the movie “Superman.” Although Superman is the lead character in his film, he isn’t fighting alone. Alongside him, there are a handful of superheroes who seem to be supporting him in a battle against the primary antagonist. Mister Terrific isn’t entirely new, but he isn’t an old character either, especially when it comes to his portrayal in “Superman.” The original Mister Terrific made his debut during the Golden Age in 1942’s “Sensation Comics” #1. However, the Mister Terrific you see now is Michael Holt, who debuted in 1997’s “Spectre” #54. A different version of this character also appeared in the Arrowverse under the name Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum).

In this upcoming film, the focus shifts to Mister Terrific as the main character, with Superman taking a supporting role. Although details are scarce, here’s what we know so far: he’s part of an elite team called the Justice Squad, unlike the well-known Justice League that isn’t financially backed by corporations. The man funding their operations is Maxwell Lord, CEO of LordTech and a wealthy adversary to the notorious Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult in this movie.

Mister Terrific is one of the smartest people in the DC Universe

One consistent trait in portrayals of Mister Terrific, be they animated, live-action, in video games, or comic books, is his extraordinary intelligence. This genius uses his skills and immense brainpower to combat crime and improve the world, doing it quite effectively. His main tools often include spheres that can float remotely and execute a wide range of functions he dreams up, even providing assistance to an ally during a battle.

Mister Terrific is constantly surrounded by his T-Spheres, which grant him various abilities such as flight, communication, holographic projection, system hacking, and numerous other functions. Furthermore, he dons a nanotech T-Mask that renders him undetectable to all technological devices. He’s capable of constructing whatever is required for his missions, and his intelligence exceeds even that of Batman, making him exceptionally intelligent compared to most characters in the DC Universe.

In Gathegi’s portrayal of Mister Terrific, he seems remarkably similar to his comic book persona. According to Gathegi, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “He’s a man who doesn’t believe in gods but champions justice. After losing his wife, he found purpose in knowledge.
