Funny person Shane Gillis had a brief stint in Division I college football at Elon University, a school not widely recognized in North Carolina. On July 16, 2025, the former offensive tackle who was initially accepted to West Point but left shortly thereafter (West Point wasn’t really his scene), will be hosting the ESPYs, an annual ESPN awards ceremony honoring athletes with resilience and longevity. No worries, Gillis has been thriving in his career since then.
Gillis’ Netflix comedy “Tires” launched its second season recently; according to the most recent statistics from the streaming service, the series remains among the top 10 most popular shows.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about being part of the ESPYs this year! After all, I’m quite the sports aficionado, and I can hardly wait for this fantastic event to unfold.
They usually are.
Each year, the ESPY Awards honor outstanding achievements in sports. These awards are jointly produced by ESPN and Full Day Productions; Connor Schell and Dave Chamberlin serve as executive producers on behalf of Full Day.
As a die-hard sports enthusiast and the executive producer of The ESPYs at ESPN, I couldn’t agree more with Shane being selected as our host. In my own words, I’d say:
“Shane isn’t just a leading comedian, but also a devoted sports fan, which made him the perfect fit for hosting The ESPYs. We’re ecstatic to collaborate with him in crafting an entertaining spectacle that honors this year’s most memorable sports moments. I can’t wait to see his magic on stage!
2019 saw comedian and podcaster Gillis being hired and subsequently let go from Saturday Night Live following the re-emergence of some questionable clips from a 2018 episode of Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, which he co-hosts with Matt McCusker. This podcast ranks as the top Patreon podcast worldwide. After his departure from SNL, Gillis has hosted the show on two separate occasions.
Heading into 2025, I’m super pumped for the ESPYs, presented by Capital One! These prestigious awards will unfold live from The Dolby Theatre in LA on a Wednesday, July 16th, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time. You can catch all the action on ABC, or if you prefer streaming, the highlights will be available on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ the very next day!
