This year, PlayStation experienced an unusual month, marked by Bungie postponing Marathon indefinitely following a surge of criticism, and Sony re-issuing games like The Last of Us seemingly for the umpteenth time. To add to this, they unveiled a remastered version of Days Gone, a fantastic game, but not necessarily what fans were anticipating.
Now, the sequel to “Death Stranding,” titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” has been released, and it’s generating buzz as a potential Game of the Year. Moreover, being the sole PlayStation 5 exclusive game for this year, it currently holds the title of Sony’s top game in 2025.
The game has gained widespread praise from prominent gaming platforms and traditional media sources. Numerous reviewers have labeled it as a “masterpiece” and “Hideo Kojima’s best work so far.” It has been garnering perfect ratings and some near-perfect scores, positioning itself as one of Kojima’s most impressive creations since Metal Gear Solid.
The triumph of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” was largely predictable, given that fans of the series have eagerly anticipated this follow-up since the original game debuted six years back. Despite Kojima’s wish for the sequel to spark debate, it appears that players are taking to it more warmly than initially projected.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say that the game currently reigning supreme as the best PlayStation 5 exclusive this year isn’t exactly shocking. After all, it’s the only significant PS5 launch title we’ve seen thus far. It seems Sony has been focusing on PC ports lately, with games like The Last of Us and Stellar Blade finding their way onto our screens as well.

Death Stranding 2: On the Shore sets the pace for Kojima Productions and Sony this year, with anticipation building as its official release draws near. Although exact sales figures are yet to be revealed, early feedback from critics and gamers has been remarkably favorable, even from those who initially dismissed its “walking game” mechanics as uninteresting.
For the remainder of this year, there aren’t too many exclusive games for the PS5 that have been officially confirmed. Instead, most of the upcoming releases are from third parties. With Ghost of Yotei and Lost Soul Aside not due until later in the year, Kojima’s new sci-fi title is the main draw to stimulate sales for the PlayStation 5 again.

At this moment, it’s uncertain if “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” will be solely available for the PS5. Given that the original game followed a similar pattern, there’s a possibility that a PC version could be released sometime in the future.
It seems like Sony’s future approach might involve reducing the number of exclusive games released annually, yet ensuring each one offers an exceptional gaming experience. These games will feature captivating stories, distinctive gameplay mechanics, and graphics and performance that truly highlight the capabilities of the PlayStation 5.

Regarding our review of Gfinity, we’ve just started playing the game now that Kojima Productions has given us a copy post-embargo. We don’t want to rush through the story, so we’ll be sharing our detailed thoughts with you all shortly.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launches on June 26 exclusively for the PS5.
