The Alpha Zombie Will Return in Next ‘28 Years Later’ Movie

[This story contains spoilers from 28 Years Later.]

In the movie “28 Years Later”, several distinct personalities stood out, including the secluded Dr. Kelson, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, the daring young Spike, played by Alfie Williams, and the enigmatic cult leader Jimmy, embodied by Jack O’Connell, who makes a dramatic appearance at the end.

However, it was a specific character that truly mesmerized the online world during the movie’s successful $30 million debut weekend. This character was Samson, also known as The Alpha Zombie, portrayed by Chi Lewis-Parry. He garnered affection with his imposing stature, his penchant for gruesomely ripping off human heads, and not to forget, the unique addition of a prosthetic penis.

During the film’s $30 million opening weekend, one character particularly captivated the internet. This was Samson, also known as The Alpha Zombie, played by Chi Lewis-Parry. He won over hearts and minds with his massive physique, his taste for ripping off human heads, and, indeed, a prosthetic penis.

Or even more simply:

During the movie’s opening weekend, Samson (The Alpha Zombie) was the character that stole the show online. Played by Chi Lewis-Parry, he was loved for his towering presence, gory head ripping, and a unique prosthetic accessory.

Director Danny Boyle confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that there will indeed be additional Samson character featured in the upcoming sequel titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

In the second movie, Jack O’Connell, who was the character you met at the end of the first film, plays a significant role. He appears alongside Ralph Fiennes, as well as the large character portrayed by Samson,” Boyle notes.

Sony produced “28 Years Later” and “The Bone Temple” consecutively, with Boyle helming the initial project while Nia DaCosta took over for the second. Tom Rothman, head of Sony films, is enthusiastic about both productions and optimistic regarding a potential third installment that involves collaborations between Boyle and Alex Garland, who wrote “28 Days Later.

Rothman describes the latest “28 Years Later” as less of a zombie movie and more of an emotionally charged drama set against a rugged backdrop. He further mentions that the upcoming film will focus more on the cruelty humans inflict upon each other.

Currently, Sony is prioritizing the prolonged cinematic release of “28 Years Later,” which has grossed $60 million worldwide, and simultaneously planning for the January debut of “Bone Temple.” Notably, Spike will reappear in this upcoming film, with Cillian Murphy from “28 Days Later” making a special appearance as well.

In the past, filmmaker DaCosta ventured into franchise productions with Marvel Studio’s “The Marvels,” a project that did not receive critical or financial success. DaCosta herself acknowledged that it was more of a Marvel Studios production rather than her personal work. However, with the movie titled “Bone Temple,” Boyle and writer-producer Garland claim that this time around, DaCosta truly had the opportunity to direct her own film.

Danny Boyle recalls her stating, ‘I won’t direct a Danny Boyle-style film.’ She was firm about that decision, and true to her word, she hasn’t. Instead, she created her own movie, which is quite powerful. I believe her past experiences have given her clarity about what she wants to achieve and how she intends to do it, as she’s open about her intentions from the start.

Over the years following “28 Days Later”, Garland has progressed from screenwriter to director of movies like “Ex Machina” and “Civil War”. These experiences taught him the importance of taking a step back when overseeing the production of the “28 Years Later” series, as he wouldn’t appreciate someone dictating instructions on his own film sets.

According to Garland, he handed them the script and they agreed to create the movie. After that, his involvement in the project became minimal as he didn’t attend the film set. He mentions that he was only present for a couple of days during rehearsals due to technical reasons, but once the actual filming began, he wasn’t there anymore.

Regarding future prospects, Boyle has been vocal about wanting a third movie, but it hasn’t received official approval yet. Rothman remains optimistic about this possibility.

Rothman mentions that he doesn’t want to tempt fate, but given the fantastic feedback and powerful global debut, we’re optimistic about the outcome.
