Global powerhouse CJ ENM broadens its influence in Latin America by securing three distribution deals for Korean dramas on Mexico’s leading television networks. These agreements involve the placement of numerous Korean series on Imagen Televisión, Televisa Univision, and TV Azteca, all scheduled to air during prime-time K-drama slots. These partnerships highlight the escalating global popularity of commercially successful Korean narratives that CJ ENM has advocated for over a decade. Notably, Latin America has been consistently growing as one of the most passionate markets for K-dramas beyond Asia.
Sebastian Kim, Vice President of CJ ENM’s International Content Business Department, stated that partnerships with Imagen Televisión, Televisa Univision, and TV Azteca outline their ambition for global growth – integrating Korean content into mainstream cultures worldwide. He mentioned that these deals are merely the initial steps in a series of planned expansions in this region.
At the Asia-Pacific media and entertainment conference in Bali this week, it was revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that some significant deals have been struck. These deals signify a notable expansion of Korean dramas’ influence on Mexican television.
The agreement with Imagen Televisión was the initial one among the three collaborations. Starting in April, this television network has been broadcasting a wide variety of titles from CJ ENM, including hit romantic series like “Familiar Wife,” “Oh My Baby,” “Mr. Queen,” “Emergency Couple,” “Another Miss Oh,” and “Yumi’s Cells.
More recently, partnerships have been established with Televisa Univision and TV Azteca, expanding the reach of K-drama content for Mexican viewers, as stated by CJ.
Or:
CJ has announced that they’ve formed new partnerships with Televisa Univision and TV Azteca, which will increase the availability of K-drama shows for Mexican audiences.
Televisa Univision plans to air hit Korean dramas such as “Guardian: The Great and Lonely God,” or “Goblin,” starring Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun, and “Lovely Runner” featuring Byeon Woo-seok and Kim Hye-yoon, through their Canal 5 channel. Last year, CJ ENM and Televisa Univision teamed up for the premiere of “True Beauty,” starring Mun Ka-young and Cha Eun-woo, which made its debut on Canal 5 in September. This was the first Korean drama to air during prime time on the channel, and it resonated strongly with viewers. The companies report that “True Beauty” has since returned for a rebroadcast, which is currently surpassing its initial performance.
The TV Azteca deal is aimed at presenting a broader spectrum of genres to Mexican audiences. The “K-7” programming block, debuting on Azteca 7 channel, will highlight Korean titles such as the romantic fantasy series Hotel Del Luna, The Heavenly Idol, the crime thriller Flower of Evil, and the romantic drama Touch Your Heart.
According to Sergio Riva Palacio Valdés, the director of marketing and advertising at TV Azteca, Korean productions have captivated a devoted and fervent fanbase with their heartfelt narratives and intense emotions. These dramas, ranging from passionate love stories to nail-biting thrillers, have transcended their niche status, leaving a significant mark on the global stage.
