APOS: BBC Studios Asia Teams With Korea’s Studio JanChi for Culinary Docuseries ‘12 Seas’

BBC Studios Asia has revealed its initial collaboration with South Korean production company Studio JanChi, a four-episode culinary travel show, tentatively named “12 Seas“.

At this week’s APOS media summit in the tropical paradise of Bali, I’m thrilled to share that a new project is on the horizon! This venture is an extension of BBC Studios’ strategic alliance with KOCCA, Korea Creative Content Agency, demonstrating their commitment to Asian narratives that resonate globally. In other words, it’s full steam ahead for compelling stories from this vibrant region!

In 2026, Edward Lee, a renowned Korean-American chef, and Ryu Soo-young, an actor, will start a journey around the South Korean coastline for a new series airing on BBC Earth and BBC Player in Asia. They’ll delve into the customs and methods behind Korea’s most treasured seafood recipes, from manually collecting seaweed using the Ttulidae technique on rocky tidal flats to catching anchovies with traditional bamboo traps. According to BBC Asia, this adventure will allow them to fully experience South Korea’s rich maritime culinary heritage.

Studio JanChi is well-known for creating K-food programs, and their idea for the show 12 Seas instantly caught our attention,” commented Ryan Shiotani, Vice President of Content at BBC Studios Asia. This intriguing series will provide BBC Earth viewers with a unique viewpoint on Korea and its seafood, as seen through the lens of celebrated chef Edward Lee and his culinary partner Ryu Soo-young.

The show continues the momentum set by “Deep Dive Korea: Song Ji Hyo’s Haenyeo Adventure,” BBC Studios Asia’s inaugural Korean production, created jointly with domestic network JTBC.

Studio JanChi, renowned for creating culinary documentaries like “Korean Pork Belly Rhapsody” and “A Nation of Kimchi,” was selected for a co-production deal after a competition held by BBC Studios and KOCCA last year. This company, part of ELTV, has established itself as a producer of culturally enriching content focused on food themes.

Studio JanChi, famous for producing documentaries about food such as “Korean Pork Belly Rhapsody” and “A Nation of Kimchi,” was chosen for a co-production project following a competition organized by BBC Studios and KOCCA last year. This subsidiary of ELTV specializes in creating factual content that delves into the cultural aspects of food.

Studio JanChi’s CEO, Heonseok Baek, expressed excitement about collaborating with BBC Studios on a project following last year’s successful pitch. With its three vast seas, one of the world’s largest tidal flats, and more than 3,000 islands, Korea’s seafood and ocean narrative is deeply intertwined. We are eager to share this captivating tale with audiences in Asia and beyond, together with BBC Studios,” said Heonseok Baek.

12 Seas will be distributed worldwide, excluding Korea, by BBC Studios. Meanwhile, Studio JanChi maintains the rights to air the series within Korea. At present, the show is being produced and is scheduled for release next year.
