The debut screening of Dino Mustafić’s Bosnian dark comedy titled “The Pavilion” will kick off the 31st annual Sarajevo Film Festival this summer, as announced on Wednesday by festival organizers.
Mustafić described the film as focusing on the oldest generation who are making decisions based on their conscience in today’s world. “They choose to revolt,” he said. “And rebellions can take many shapes. This one is unique.
It has been a long-standing custom that this year’s opening ceremony for the Sarajevo Film Festival will be emceed by a talented young actress from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lidija Kordić (known for her roles in “Son’s Will” and “Diva Futura”). She expressed her excitement and gratitude about hosting this event, stating, “It is an immense privilege and joy to be entrusted with the responsibility of emceeing the opening ceremony of the Sarajevo Film Festival – a festival that has played a significant role in both my professional and personal life.” She went on to share that this festival holds a special place in her heart as it was where she had her first film premiere, and now, a decade later, she feels like she’s concluding one of the most beautiful chapters of her life – in the most fitting way possible.
She remarked: “To me, the Sarajevo Film Festival is the most enchanting period in Sarajevo – the streets are bustling with people, concepts, fashion, languages, and feelings, a place where I’ve encountered and bonded with individuals who motivate me, where I first experienced – and continue to feel – the profound impact that film has and its immense power.”
Mustafić commented on the event: “Our festival’s ambiance is distinctive and exceptional, and I genuinely wish the audience will appreciate a movie featuring a vast regional cast of esteemed actors. The creators and financiers hail from various parts of the Balkans.
The Pavilion is portrayed as a “humorous yet grim story about a band of seniors living in a retirement center. Frustrated after decades of mistreatment and indignity, they opt for a daring uprising. Equipped with contraband firearms, they seize control of the facility, kidnap the staff, and confront the authorities.
The Pavilion was jointly produced by Panglas from Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with Cineplanet from Croatia, Krug Film from North Macedonia, Monte Royal Pictures from Serbia, Natenane Productions from Montenegro, and Realstage from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The screenplay was penned by Viktor Ivančić, with Emir Imamović Pirke contributing as co-writer. Almir Đikoli and Mustafa Mustafić handled the cinematography, Vladimir Gojun edited the film, Bojan Zulfikarpašić composed the music, Zhaklina Krstevska designed the costumes, and Mirna Ler was in charge of set design.
