Media businessman Byron Allen recalled a childhood spent wandering studios at NBC.
64-year-old Allen recounted an incident from his childhood at the CAA Amplify 2025 Summit. He explained to the audience, “My mother gave birth to me when she was 16 and it was just 17 days after her 17th birthday, in April of ’61.” Allen added that the circumstances were challenging because a black teenager and a newborn baby had limited civil rights at that time.
Born and raised in Detroit, he shared that him and his mother resided in Los Angeles for a significant period, spending years on people’s sofas or in their spare rooms. This was while his mother pursued her master’s degree in cinema and TV production at UCLA. Allen remembered a pivotal moment when his mother, after being turned down from various job opportunities, bravely approached NBC with a unique proposition: “Do you offer an internship program where I could work here for free?” They responded negatively. However, she persisted and asked one more question that would forever alter their lives: “Would you consider creating such a program?” To their surprise, they agreed.
Allen shared that financial constraints prevented his mother from arranging childcare, so they both frequently went to NBC together. He confessed to staying quiet like a mouse because he wasn’t supposed to be there. “I was there, and I watched Johnny Carson perform on The Tonight Show,” he recounted. “Then, I crossed the hall and observed Redd Foxx as he performed Sanford and Son.
Previously, I aspired to follow in the footsteps of my father, who was employed at Ford Motor Company in Detroit, and my grandfather, who worked at Great Lakes Steel. However, being here at NBC has entirely shifted that perspective.
Besides discussing his personal struggles with feeling like an imposter during his climb to becoming CEO, Allen highlighted the pivotal abilities that contributed to his success, tracing it back to his mother. He expressed, “I believe our country has more instances of sexism than racism. Sexism is incredibly pervasive. Growing up, I witnessed my mother bravely confront both racism and sexism. Her resilience left a lasting impression on me.
Though engaged in battles of her own, she consistently emphasized the importance of not only waging our own fights, but also joining forces to combat others’ struggles,” he explained further.
Back in the 70s, when Allen was only ten years old, his mother made it clear to him that she disapproved of how the country handled gay individuals. “We’re going to advocate for gay rights,” Allen remembered his mother saying. “I’ll fight this cause,” he continued, earning laughter from the crowd.
Allen’s talk took place during the CAA Amplify 2025 Summit, which happened at the Montage in Laguna Beach annually. This gathering gathers prominent figures from media, entertainment, social justice, sports, technology, nonprofits, and other sectors for a day filled with discussions and learning. As the event came to an end, Natalie Tran, executive director of the CAA Foundation, addressed the crowd, stating, “Today at Amplify, I witnessed genuine leadership, in a time when it seems we’ve lost faith in our leaders.
For those who occupy positions of power, it’s no longer enough to simply be present and uphold culture. Instead, our goal should be to restructure these spaces so that fairness is not a goal but an inherent standard. This means ensuring that communities are not just involved, but they are prioritized, equipped, and safeguarded.
Besides Allen, I listened to Vin Diesel, Laverne Cox, the former prime minister of New Zealand Dame Jacinda Ardern, Mustafa Suleyman – CEO of Microsoft AI, Anthony D. Romero from ACLU, and Janai S. Nelson, president of NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Each of them shared insights on a variety of subjects.
