From a devoted film aficionado’s perspective, I found myself captivated by the meteoric rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cinematic icon. This ascent to stardom occurred during the period between my first encounter with “Terminator” (1984) and the unforgettable experience of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991).
So director James Cameron shrewdly turned his killing machine character into an antihero.
In a manner reminiscent to Director Gerard Johnstone, the film “M3GAN” (released in 2023) can be likened to having taken a similar path. This movie featured an unsettling artificial intelligence robot that rebelled against humanity, leading to a whirlwind of events filled with the delightful blend of horror and comedy elements, which some might refer to as an entertaining chaos.
In “M3GAN 2.0,” the menacing robot transforms into our greatest ally to combat a danger that surpasses it in deadliness. Unlike previous iterations, this new franchise presents a unique twist on its theme.
1. “Terminator 2” continues to stand out as one of the most exceptional sequels ever produced.
2. “M3GAN 2.0” is particularly effective in serving as a warning story.
3. Not every movie necessitates a follow-up.
The fast-paced start of the movie quickly introduces the primary characters. Gemma, portrayed by Allison Williams, is openly advocating for a slowdown in AI progress. Her views are based on her personal experiences.
As a movie connoisseur, I can’t help but empathize with Cady (Violet McGraw), a girl maturing before our eyes, yet yearning for the earlier model of M3GAN who was always by her side. Reminds me of my own nostalgic longings…
Heck, the memes alone were priceless.
The opening scene introduces us to Amelia, a formidable robot controlled by the United States Army. This mechanical marvel outshines drones in its sophistication. The character of Amelia, portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno, is aggressive and swiftly deviates from its programmed instructions, causing it to rebel.
Gemma hesitates as she reactivates M3GAN, believing she’s the sole individual capable of dealing with Amelia.
Although the synopsis might seem straightforward, the complexity of this overstuffed sequel is deceptive. Each stage of the narrative is unnecessarily convoluted, leading the primary characters to explain their actions and intentions excessively just to thwart Amelia.
If you watched “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” over the summer, you might be familiar with this mistaken method.
Show, don’t tell. This isn’t hard, folks.

In a departure from the horror genre that brought us “Housebound,” Johnstone, the lesser-known artist, seems to have moved away from the elements that initially made the movie shine. Instead, we find ourselves immersed in an action-adventure with a hint of sci-fi humor.
Big mistake.
In other words, fresh faces may initially create a stir, but their impact is often short-lived. So, why entice renowned actor Jemaine Clement for your production, only to assign him the role of a pompous Tech Bro with limited screen time?
In simpler terms, the creator excels at coming up with humorous lines, and Williams does a great job responding when the humor hits home. There’s a part where M3GAN sings for an extended period, which could be shorter, but watching Williams interact with her robotic co-star is hilarious.
As a seasoned film critic, I must admit that the initial movie left an indelible mark, resonating profoundly within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, becoming a cherished symbol of cinematic camp. Yet, emulating such cultural prowess may prove challenging for the sequel. A dash of camp could certainly breathe new life into its narrative.
At least it wouldn’t require dialogue to explain every last detail to the audience.
“M3GAN 2.0 makes its debut in an intriguing timeframe. Two years back, artificial intelligence stirred unease, yet it was not widespread. Nowadays, you’d be hard-pressed to avoid AI.”
Good luck.
In the second part, they had an opportunity to emphasize the terror more significantly by intensifying its chilling aspects. However, the emerging technology is portrayed in a casual manner. Instead, there’s a concentration on action-packed scenes and superficial discussions about artificial intelligence’s possibilities.
Our M3GAN deserves better. So do audiences.
HiT or Miss: “M3GAN 2.0” proves not every genre delight deserves the franchise treatment.
