‘Rivals’ Breakout Bella Maclean Cast in Ray Panthaki’s Directorial Debut ‘In Starland’ (Exclusive)

Actress Bella Maclean, well recognized by viewers for her part in the Disney+ version of Jilly Cooper’s “Rivals”, has been cast as the main character in Ray Panthaki’s upcoming independent film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the fictional town of Starland, a middle-aged man portrayed by breakout star Clarence Maclin from Sing Sing finds himself trapped in his small-town life. However, everything changes when he encounters a group of adventurous young artists, including Maclean. This encounter shifts his perspective significantly. In addition to Marcus Scribner known for his role in Black-ish and Maxwell Cunningham from Top Dog, this talented cast will also be part of the story.

Maclean first appeared on TV in BBC One’s “Silent Witness” and later became a part of the fourth season cast in Netflix’s “Sex Education,” playing the role of school student Jem.

2024 saw a young actress bring Agatha ‘Taggie’ O’Hara, the underestimated daughter of Declan (Aidan Turner) and Maud (Victoria Smurfit) to life on Disney+ series Rivals. Despite battling dyslexia, she pursued her passion for cooking. Her performance was well-received, leading to her return in season two, following the show’s success with critics.

I’m excited to share that my first directorial endeavor, jointly penned with Jason Kavan, is on the horizon. You might recognize me from my roles opposite Stephen Graham in “Marcella” (2016-2020), “Boiling Point” (2021), where I earned a British Independent Film Award nomination, and “Gangs of London” (2020). Not to mention, “The Serpent Queen” (2022) and several other projects. Now, it’s time for me to step behind the camera and bring a new story to life!

Under their recently established production company, Le Bateau Lavoir (previously known as Urban Way), Panthaki and Daniel Khalili (known for “Trespass Against Us”) are set to collaborate on a new project titled “In Starland“. Initial reports about this venture were made by Variety. Additionally, Emmy-winning producer Daisy Allsop will be involved in the production under her own banner, Archface.

Production on In Starland got underway in Mississippi in April.
