The third season premiere of The Gilded Age delivered the show’s best opening to date.
On its U.S. debut on June 22, HBO’s new drama attracted 2.7 million viewers across various platforms within a span of three days. This figure represents a 27% increase compared to the season two premiere (which had 2.1 million viewers over three days back in October 2023), and surpasses the series debut from 2022, which drew in 2 million viewers within the same time frame.

Typically, when it comes to HBO series like “The Gilded Age”, many viewers choose to watch episodes after their initial broadcast. The premiere on the HBO cable channel attracted 430,000 viewers initially, as reported by Nielsen. However, the remaining 2.27 million viewers likely streamed the episode on Max, watched a recorded version (DVR), or tuned in during a rebroadcast.
Approximately 430,000 people watched the latest airing, which isn’t far off from our previous season premieres. For instance, the first episode of season two attracted 452,000 viewers, and the series premiere pulled in 463,000.
The strong initial performance of the show is certainly promising for the series, having been created by Julian Fellowes, who also brought us Downton Abbey. Notably, the last two seasons have experienced significant growth in viewership throughout their airings, with each finale attracting around 50% more viewers than its corresponding premiere. In fact, season two concluded HBO’s 90-day evaluation period averaging 7.1 million viewers per episode.
HBO pointed out that interest in seasons one and two of “The Gilded Age” surged prior to the season three debut. During the week of June 16-22, the show’s viewership increased fivefold compared to the preceding week, although precise numbers are not disclosed.
