Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, known for penning the story of Facebook in ‘The Social Network‘, is planning a comeback to the social media giant. According to recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter, he has penned a sequel script that he plans to direct as a movie feature for Sony Pictures.
The initial “Social Network” film was adapted from Ben Mezrich’s book titled “The Accidental Billionaires,” whereas its subsequent installment draws inspiration from a series of articles called “The Facebook Files” published in October 2021 by the Wall Street Journal. These articles delved into the negative consequences arising from the social network.
Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser are producing the sequel.
Jesse Eisenberg was nominated for an Oscar by playing the pivotal role of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook in the movie “The Social Network”. It’s uncertain if he will take on this part again for the sequel, but it’s difficult to envision another actor filling Zuckerberg’s shoes.
David Fincher directed the initial movie that garnered eight Oscar nominations and claimed three awards, one of which was for the adapted screenplay by Sorkin. The film grossed $226 million worldwide and continues to be a significant cultural reference, as memes featuring Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield’s character Eduardo Saverin, and Justin Timberlake’s representation of Sean Parker are still prevalent.
Aaron Sorkin has mentioned his attempt at writing a possible follow-up in recent times, expressing his belief that Facebook played a role in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
Last year, Sorkin stated that there isn’t actually a consistent struggle between expansion and ethical standards at Facebook. Instead, he noted, it’s just about growth. In other words, if Mark Zuckerberg were to suddenly decide that $120 billion isn’t worth the slightest extra profit, he could potentially prioritize integrity over growth by simply reducing a dollar from the price tag – changing a ‘1’ to a ‘0’.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to give a shout-out to Sorkin, the brilliant wordsmith who crafts dialogue like none other. He’s not just a screenwriter, but also a director, bringing stories to life on the big screen in movies like “Molly’s Game”, “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, and “Being the Ricardos”.
Deadline first broke the news.
