Over the past ten years, the fame of K-Pop has skyrocketed, creating a niche in the music industry that companies such as SiriusXM have seized, giving opportunities to the genre’s talented performers.
Michael Tam, host and programmer for SiriusXM K-Pop, shares his perspective with The Hollywood Reporter, stating that K-Pop feels particularly logical to him. Apart from his role at Sirius, Tam is also responsible for managing Pandora’s K-Pop selections. His passion for the music genre dates back years, and he recalls Taeyang’s ‘Wedding Dress’ as a song that captivated him significantly.
The host openly advocated for representation, even using K-Pop as an example, on SiriusXM radio. Before their current station, SiriusXM had a channel called 88Rising Radio, which was a partnership between the management company and label 88Rising. Tam stated that this was the starting point for Asian music on SiriusXM.
In Tam’s words, “We experienced numerous K-Pop artist takeovers. Previously, it was Seventeen that took over. Following their debut, we collaborated with Le Sserafim quite early on. And even New Jeans (or NJZ) when they first made their debut. Once our original channel ceased to exist, we decided to establish a new K-Pop radio station.
Beyond just playing music, SiriusXM K-Pop, the Korean pop specialized station by the satellite radio company, offers fans an opportunity for direct interaction with their favorite artists through video chats and temporary control over the station’s programming.
Tam explains that the acquisition process is quite comprehensive, involving a detailed examination. This process allows artists to discuss their most popular songs, new releases, and ongoing projects – be it about their daily lives, their current tours, future plans, or any other relevant topics,” she says.
Previously, Jennie from Blackpink dominated a channel takeover, while Sunghoon and Jake from Enhypen discussed their Coachella experiences. To illustrate this, Tam highlights that Enhypen’s visit to the studio allowed them to delve deeply into topics like Coachella, their tour, and more, thereby strengthening their bond with U.S. fans.
The main home for the K-Pop channel is online, but it occasionally gets broadcasted via satellite. During May, as part of SiriusXM’s programming dedicated to Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the K-Pop channel, along with Horizon (their Asian music station) and Mazaa (a southeast Asian music station), were showcased on satellite.
The interest in K-Pop at SiriusXM, and across the U.S., continues to surge. As Tam explains, “There’s just so many enthusiasts eager to hear it, and even the artists themselves seem keen on making a bigger impact here and strengthening their bond with their fans.
With increasing demand, SiriusXM K-Pop is continually expanding its aspirations for the future. As Tam puts it, “We’ve come a long way since our launch a few years back, and our aim isn’t necessarily a final destination, but rather to consistently provide a rich and comprehensive listening experience.
It’s amazing to see how involved K-Pop fans are within their community. We regularly get emails filled with comments, whether they’re positive or negative, we carefully consider each one,” he continues. “I believe that there’s a lot more to come for K-Pop on SiriusXM in the upcoming times.
