As we approach the sweltering heat of mid-summer, some people might envision themselves enjoying snow cones, pool time, and sunbathing. On the Hallmark Channel, however, it’s a totally different story — it’s Christmas in July! The upcoming Hallmark films set to air in their 2025 TV lineup may appear chilly, but several actors have revealed that filming holiday movies during summer months can be downright sweltering. Interestingly, filming during the winter might actually be more challenging.
I recently got to chat with Alec Santos, who is set to appear in the Hallmark original movie “A Machu Picchu Proposal” on June 28. Following that, he’ll start the Christmas in July celebrations a week later in “Unwrapping Christmas: Tina’s Miracle”. By the way, he did mention that things heated up during filming for the latter, describing it as quite passionate!
In Ottawa, where the Christmas movie shop is located, the temperature soared to a scorching 95 degrees. Despite wearing a leather jacket, the intense heat inside was almost unbearable. Whenever they called “cut,” it felt like shedding layers as people rushed to help with fans, ice packs behind necks, or even an occasional ice pack on our backs during filming.
It’s not a particularly enjoyable situation, and it’s easy to see why Alison Sweeney dislikes filming Christmas movies during the summer. However, Alec Santos shared a different perspective with TopMob, stating that he found this less favorable compared to his experience with A Machu Picchu Proposal. He further added:
To be honest, I found it less bothersome. Interestingly enough, this film, titled “A Machu Picchu Proposal,” includes a scene set in a pool. However, during the shooting of this movie, it was winter in Peru, which is unusual for a summer flick. The temperature that night was approximately 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and believe it or not, we filmed that chilly pool scene! So, dealing with coldness in a summer production is more challenging than handling heat, because when you’re cold, hiding goosebumps becomes difficult.
It turns out this is quite logical, and Alec Santos chuckled when he remembered how cold it became during the movie shoot in Peru’s filming location.
As a devoted cinephile, I found myself in an unexpected predicament during filming when the director abruptly remarked, “Alec, your jaw seems rather active.” To which I responded, “I can’t help that!” After all, acting school didn’t cover this particular challenge! It’s a bit like when someone wipes you down to check for sweat, or pretends it’s melted snow on your face. But when the temperature drops, getting warm again is no easy task.
I actually love the idea of Hallmark trying to pass off sweat as snow residue.
In a nod to his usual preferences, actor Jonathan Bennett, well-known for his roles in Hallmark productions like “Mean Girls,” expressed a similar perspective on why filming during the summer is advantageous. Contrary to his past remarks about the heat, he suggested that making movies in the summer is more productive because when people are cold, they tend to move at a slower pace.
Fortunately, we’ll have the opportunity to witness two scenarios along with Alec Santos, hopefully from the climate-controlled comfort of our living rooms. Don’t miss the pool scene and the shivering actor’s teeth in “A Machu Picchu Proposal” which will be aired at 8 p.m. ET on June 28th on Hallmark. After that, join us again for “Unwrapping Christmas: Tina’s Miracle” also at 8 p.m. ET on July 5th.
