Mubi Takes Park Chan-Wook’s ‘No Other Choice’ For Multiple Territories, Including U.K., Australia

Mubi has obtained distribution rights for Park Chan-wook’s film titled “No Other Choice” across several regions such as Latin America, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Turkey, India, Australia/New Zealand, and South East Asia. Cinéart will collaborate with Mubi to manage the theatrical showings in Benelux.

The acquisition is a result of Neon’s announcement yesterday about securing the North American rights to the film. Mubi and Neon have shared an affinity for several arthouse films this year. At Cannes, Mubi picked up various international rights for Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner titled “It Was Just an Accident“, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent“, and Oliver Laxe’s “Sirat“. Notably, these same films are set for domestic release by Neon.

Titled “No Other Choice“, this upcoming film is an adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s novel “The Ax“. The principal actors include Lee Byung-hun, famously known for his role in “Squid Game“, and Son Ye-jin, recognized from “A Moment to Remember“. Alongside them are Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, Cha Seung-won, and Yoo Yeon-seok. The plot revolves around Man-su (played by Lee), a middle-aged man who, having lost his job at a paper company after 25 years, resorts to extreme measures in his quest for employment, eliminating the other job candidates one by one.

Park adapted the novel for the screen together with Lee Kyoung-mi, Don McKellar and Jahye Lee.

The film titled “No Other Choice” was jointly created by Park and Back Jisun from Moho Film, in collaboration with Michèle Ray Gavras and Alexandre Gavras from KG Productions. Miky Lee of CJ Group acted as executive producer. CJ ENM, who financed the project, brokered the deal for distribution through Mubi.

For the second time, Mubi is teaming up with director Park, following their international distribution of “Decision to Leave” (2022) which included the U.S. This film was Park’s most successful North American release, raking in approximately $2.2 million, surpassing both “Stoker” and “The Handmaiden”.
