In the follow-up to director Gerard Johnstone’s 2022 horror success, he amplifies the chilling consequences stemming from an AI world without regulations. In the first movie, Robotics Engineer Gemma (played by Allison Williams) inadvertently created a miniature menace with M3GAN (portrayed by Amie Donald and Jenna Davis), which attempted to harm her and her niece Cady (Violet McGraw). After narrowly escaping death, Gemma takes a stand against unchecked AI development and its potential dangers in the sequel.

After the AI technology is released, it becomes impossible to halt the cybersecurity threats, as demonstrated in M3GAN’s advanced version, AMELIA. An abbreviation for Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android, AMELIA is a more advanced, capable robot created by terrorists. However, it poses a lethal risk to anyone who acquires the technology due to its military applications.
Actress Ivanna Sakhno (from “Ahsoka”) breathes life into the character of AMELIA in “M3GAN 2.0” and she recently spoke with SYFY WIRE about the various transformations her robot undergoes to carry out its tasks, as well as the sources that influenced her in crafting her eerie assassin robot.

Unlike M3GAN, who maintains her doll-like appearance, AMELIA is more akin to a robotic version of Sydney Bristow from the TV series “Alias”. As an advanced AI, she can adapt her look according to the tasks she’s given. This allowed Sakhno to experiment with different appearances for AMELIA, ranging from a data analyst with a nerdy style to a party girl resembling a Fembot, and even a design inspired by the city in “Metropolis”.
Sakhno shared that it was incredibly rewarding to design and watch Jeriana San Juan create the various costumes, and even more so to wear them herself. She added that while the stunts, particularly the Chrome Queen suit in the final scene, were challenging, it was all worth it for a meaningful purpose.
Every glance and AMELIA’s actions in the workplace are designed to demonstrate the adaptability and rapid advancement of her technology. Unlike the M3GAN robot, who developed a distinct personality, AMELIA adheres to a rigid code of conduct that never softens or becomes sarcastic.
Johnstone granted Sakhno the liberty to decide on Amelia’s portrayal, particularly in terms of physicality. Despite her character sharing a similar temperament with Robert Patrick’s T-1000 cyborg from Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Sakhno found inspiration elsewhere for her performance. She collaborated closely with movement coach Luke Hawker during the development process.
She pointed out that we should draw inspiration from various creatures and pre-existing robots for our creation, AMELIA. However, since AMELIA is intended to blend seamlessly into society, it’s important that she has a natural, human-like physicality that doesn’t reveal her artificial intelligence origins.
She referenced Jean-Luc Godard’s “Alphaville” (1965) and Mamoru Oshii’s adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell” (1995) as the main sources that influenced her development of the robotic acting style. In her opinion, the spirit of AMELIA is pivotal to the film, serving a significant role.
