The climax of “Squid Game” approaches as we gear up for its third and last season, airing in 2025 on Netflix with a subscription. Although this popular Netflix series has come to an end, there’s still hope that the story might live on in some form, no matter how it concludes. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted at a spinoff idea, and I must admit, I’d be thrilled to witness it unfold!
Initially, the show “Squid Game” shattered records upon its release in 2021, after being proposed for a decade. However, the streaming platform delayed the release of Season 2 by more than three years, much to fans’ dismay. Nevertheless, many things evolved during that interval, and it was evident when Season 2 debuted in December. Creator-producer Dong-hyuk, who also pens the scripts and directs the series, shared with Entertainment Weekly that he has been contemplating a fresh concept for another series, an idea that seems quite intriguing to him.
I’ve been pondering an intriguing concept: instead of a sequel, perhaps a spinoff focusing on the three-year timeframe between seasons 1 and 2, specifically delving into Gi-hun’s [Lee Jung-jae] search for recruiters. This period offers an opportunity to explore what the recruiters, Captain Park [Oh Dal-su], officers, or masked men were up to during this time, not within the gaming arena, but rather their lives beyond it. This is a general idea that I have which could potentially be expanded upon in the future.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but imagine a captivating series that delves into the transitional phase between Seasons 1 and 2. While Season 2 provided glimpses of the aftermath, diving deeper into Gi-hun’s immediate post-victory life, his struggle to adjust, and his commitment to dismantling the Game would undoubtedly make for an engaging watch.
Moreover, peeling back the layers of those responsible for Squid Game, revealing their ordinary lives and the clandestine activities that led them to this dark realm, would not only enrich our understanding of their motivations but also offer a compelling backstory as to how this twisted game came into existence.
There’s plenty left to explore in the storyline of Squid Game, and fans missed out on three years worth of adventures between Seasons 1 and 2. I’d be thrilled to delve deeper into what transpired during those years. Whether we’ll actually get more of that remains uncertain, as creator Dong-hyuk described it as a vague concept. However, he did hint that a future spinoff could be possible. If Netflix decides to produce another season of Squid Game, it wouldn’t be shocking given the potential for breaking even more records.

It’s quite unexpected that Dong-hyuk might consider making more of “Squid Game” or even a spinoff, given his past struggles with production. He once described Season 2 as “hell” to film, and he even lost close to ten teeth during the first season. However, if it means having more tales to share, it seems the hardships were worth it for him.
Should a sequel or spin-off of “Squid Game” ever arise, it’s unlikely to appear soon, but the possibility remains. In the meantime, fans can enjoy streaming all three seasons of this gripping South Korean series immediately.
