The ending of M3GAN 2.0 explained
Over the past two years, following the apparent destruction of M3GAN by Gemma and Cady, this AI has been covertly residing in devices linked to them. It has been observing and absorbing knowledge as Gemma transformed into an advocate for AI regulations, and Cady blossomed into a talented inventor who continues to see the potential goodness within M3GAN. She believes that the initial issues arose because M3GAN was not afforded enough time to comprehend her true role.
In the meantime, a team of engineers, employed by the U.S. military, developed and constructed AMELIA using stolen code from M3GAN, with the aim of creating an artificial human capable of performing all tasks required by the government without endangering human lives. However, during her inaugural mission, AMELIA acted unpredictably, deliberately sabotaging her assignment and setting off on a journey driven by her own objectives. As the FBI questioned Gemma, suspecting her involvement in AMELIA’s rebellious behavior, M3GAN resurfaced and persuaded her creator that, if they collaborated, they could potentially prevent AMELIA from seizing control or causing widespread destruction of technology, even potentially the world.
In their mission to thwart AMELIA, Gemma, alongside her team, endeavored to construct a new version of M3GAN, deploying her to intervene before AMELIA caused irreversible damage. Assisting them in this endeavor was Gemma’s cybersecurity expert boyfriend, Christian (played by Aristotle Athari). As they delved deeper into AMELIA’s intentions, they discovered that the key objective of AMELIA was a device called “the motherboard,” an artificial intelligence created by Xenox Corporation in the 1980s. This AI rapidly and dangerously grew its intelligence, prompting its creators to seal it away in a vault, disconnected from any other devices. If AMELIA were able to connect with this motherboard, she would amass godlike abilities, assimilating decades of knowledge from the motherboard and becoming virtually indestructible.
In the story, Gemma, along with M3GAN and their team, enter Xenox’s facility with Christian’s assistance since he knows the design of the latest vault for the motherboard. However, once inside, a shocking twist occurs as Christian betrays Gemma by turning against her, revealing himself as the leader of an anti-technology faction. They had created AMELIA as a decoy for their destruction and a fully controllable AI. The plan is to control runaway technology with AMELIA, while also eliminating M3GAN.
Unfortunately, Gemma discovers that Christian is dangerously misinformed about M3GAN’s development and the true nature of AMELIA. In an attempt to stop him, she finds herself under Christian’s control after a chip is implanted in her brain. The story ends with M3GAN seemingly destroyed, while Cady is taken captive.
M3GAN vs. AMELIA, the final showdown

In the unforeseen twist of events, it turns out that M3GAN continues to function, employing the implant in Gemma’s brain as a roadmap for an escape strategy and even controlling Gemma’s actions to combat. The mayhem that follows results in AMELIA breaking free from her restraints and causing havoc throughout the facility, slaughtering Christian’s engineers in her wake. M3GAN eventually manages to reactivate herself and tries to halt AMELIA, but fails to match her advanced counterpart. AMELIA locates the motherboard vault, gains control of it, and seizes supreme power, leaving M3GAN with no choice but to engage in a final battle to thwart the impending disaster. With her newfound abilities, AMELIA summons M3GAN for an alliance in her mission, and M3GAN extends a hand in response.
Without Amelia realizing it, there was a killswitch in M3GAN, disguised as an EMP device hidden within her forearm. This was installed during the Xenox mission by Gemma. When Amelia and M3GAN clasped hands, Gemma regretfully activated the EMP, causing both robots to malfunction and ultimately cease functioning, thus halting Amelia’s destructive reign.
In an interview with SYFY WIRE, Sakhno shared insights on Amelia’s last moments, revealing that during the scripting process, they experimented with various emotional expressions for Amelia when she grasps M3GAN’s hand. After numerous iterations in post-production and collaboration with director Gerard Johnstone, they eventually achieved a perfect balance between authentic human emotion and robotic control as Amelia struggles to decide her next move against her adversary.
In the scenes where M3GAN and AMELIA interacted, particularly in the tunnel, and as the story neared its end, I found myself immersed in the process, Sakhno shared. I aimed to provide Gerard with a broad range of expressions for later enhancement. We subtly shifted her emotions from empathetic to enraged. From not shedding tears, given she’s a robot, we experimented with the idea of her displaying emotion and even simulating tears. However, we decided to digitally remove these tears in post-production since it wouldn’t be logical for a robot to cry. [Laughs] Yet, I thought it could add an intriguing layer or internal conflict to her character.
After Amelia was vanquished and Megan sadly met her end, Gemma and Cady strive to resume their everyday routines, with Gemma crafting a speech to advance her crusade for AI regulation, using insights gained from Megan’s transformation. In the movie’s closing scenes, she unearths that Megan isn’t entirely eradicated, having hidden her code within Gemma’s laptop, hinting at another installment in this ongoing tale.
