Captain America‘s Marvel Cinematic Universe narrative is one of the best, in part due to the fact that The First Avenger doesn’t adhere to a typical lifespan. In his youth, Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans), receives a shot of super soldier serum, which gives him the strength to carry out his lifelong dedication to “do this every day.” This leads to decades of service protecting the powerless, culminating in “Avengers: Endgame” where he eventually hands over his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). When we see him aged, content, and wrinkled at that moment, he’s 180 years old.
Naturally, the next question that arises is: How on earth did we arrive at this number? As you can imagine with such a complex individual, the process was quite intricate. It encompassed advanced cryogenics from nature, time-travel to save the universe, and extraordinary lifespans beyond human capabilities. To keep things simple, let’s start from the ground up instead.
Steve Rogers was born on the 4th of July, 1918. This is evident from his enlistment papers, indicating he was in his mid-twenties when he joined the U.S. military officially. At this stage, he was an ordinary boy, burdened with numerous health problems, seemingly fated for a common life – if he could survive the war. However, after receiving the serum, he transforms into a national asset and confronts Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) in a battle that suggests he might have to give up his life.
Here’s the full Steve Rogers timeline
In Steve Rogers’ first solo film, he’s approximately 26 when his plane crashes into the Atlantic. He then remains frozen for about 66 years, waking up in 2011. After joining the Avengers shortly after, he spends the next seven years preparing for a climactic battle with Thanos, which happens to occur on his 100th birthday. This confrontation lasts another five years, making Captain America 105 when he goes back in time and eventually dances with Peggy Carter.
His tale doesn’t end there, though it does get a bit perplexing due to the uncertainty of when exactly he returned to our timeline. The series “Agent Carter,” which picks up after “Captain America: The First Avenger” and runs from 1946 to 1947, offers us a clue since Captain America is absent during that entire period. This implies that Steve doesn’t immediately reappear in 1945 after his dance. A possible theory suggests that the year 1948 could be when he resurfaces from the future again.
Although he’s technically over a hundred years old, he’s only aged the equivalent of twelve years from his first film (excluding frozen time). As for Peggy, it’s been just three short years since she was put in ice storage in 1948. The super-soldier serum clearly has an impact, as Captain America continues to live and reappears in 2023, now a grand old age of 180.
Figuring out Cap’s lifespan requires some nuance
In the final scenes of “Endgame”, Captain America seems to be approximately 180 years old. However, this figure might not be entirely accurate because, when frozen, he didn’t really age. If we deduct the 66 years he spent in a state of suspended animation from his official age, we arrive at about 114 years during “Endgame”. Despite being that old, Captain America appears quite lively for his age.
Another aspect to ponder is: Could Steve Rogers have died already in the current storyline? Given his aging even with the serum and the passage of time since Peggy Carter’s demise in 2016 (as depicted in “Captain America: Civil War”), it seems plausible that he might have passed away. It’s as if, like Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings”, Steve may have relinquished his extraordinary life after losing his beloved and passing on his heroic role. Until we learn more about when he died, it’s challenging to determine his total lifespan accurately.
As of now, Steve Rogers’ death hasn’t been officially announced, leaving open the possibility that he might reappear at some point in the future – or we may finally find out what happens to him in “Avengers: Doomsday” or another upcoming film. If he manages to survive somewhere, it would make him approximately 186 years old during the events of “Captain America: Brave New World”, or 120 years old considering non-frozen years. Regardless, this adds yet another remarkable achievement to the impressive list on Captain America’s illustrious career.
