Cynthia Erivo, Michael Bay Tackling Adaptation of Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Saturation Point’ for Universal

Universal Pictures, opening the film “Jurassic World: Rebirth” this week, plans to continue the thrilling dinosaur action and potentially start a fresh science fiction horror series.

Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in the upcoming “Wicked” films produced by the studio, is joining forces with Michael Bay and Brad Fuller from Platinum Dunes to rework the science fiction action thriller “Saturation Point” for Universal Pictures.

Minnie Schedeen is set to pen the screenplay, transforming Adrian Tchaikovsky’s acclaimed science fiction novel into a film script. Notably, Tchaikovsky is a distinguished British sci-fi author who has won Arthur C. Clarke and BSFA Awards.

The 2024 novel serves as a climate-themed thriller, where a scorching, oppressively humid region on Earth becomes virtually uninhabitable for humans. Unsurprisingly, this treacherous area becomes our central setting, where Dr. Jasmine Marks embarks on a rescue mission. As she delves deeper, she uncovers the fact that this zone is even more perilous than initially perceived. Additionally, there are hints suggesting that her corporate superiors might not be entirely truthful (a common trope, one could say), and it’s also possible that some of the intelligent life forms in this zone aren’t human.

Erivo, through her production company Edith’s Daughter, will join forces with Solome Williams in producing projects. Their company holds a first-look agreement with Universal, meaning they have priority to present their projects to the studio first before shopping them elsewhere.

Bay and Fuller will create a production through Platinum Dunes’ initial collaboration with Universal. Alex Ginno will serve as executive producer and supervise the project on behalf of Platinum Dunes.

For the studio, Universal’s top executives – Senior Vice President of Production Development, Ryan Jones, and Director of Production Development, Christine Sun – will be in charge of managing the project.

After receiving an Oscar nomination for her performance as the green witch Elphaba in “Wicked”, Erivo is set to return to the role for “Wicked: For Good”. This film, which hits theaters on November 21st, was a massive global success, earning nearly $800 million worldwide and raking in 10 Oscar nominations, with two wins.

Platinum Dunes is known for blending horror and action, as demonstrated by their involvement in successful series like A Quiet Place and The Purge franchises. Additionally, they have produced profitable movies such as Ouija and live-action adaptations of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Tchaikovsky, renowned for his work on the fantasy series “Children of Time”, is represented by both the Mic Cheetham Agency and United Talent Agency (UTA). On the other hand, Schedeen, who has projects in development at Amazon MGM, New Line Cinema, and several other studios, is represented by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, and Ziffren Brittenham.
